i recently bought a pulley kit. completely forgetting about the power steering. i want to keep it. but now i cant with the pulleys. but, i do remember seeing steering assists on a few S4's. i have a 91 coupe with a TII swap. is there a way to convert mine to the steering assisit set-up? so i can have some type of power steering. anyone done this?

i have a s5 with pullies and powersteering. just need to bolt the crank pully to the underdrive set up.

Bingo!

I have an s4 with the underdrives; thats what I did as also.

keep your eyes out for a manual rack, the car actually drives real nice with one.

Then you can get rid of that stuff too.

thanks guys...

i agree with rob i converted my rack from auto to manual (well just plugged the holes) and i like it

NoeVuh 01-23-2007 04:40 PM

i looped my hoses on my 91 but i am still wanting a manual rack. It would feel better than a looped power steering but it works for now

plugged mine, feels perfectly fine to me. im about to do it on my 88 n/a as well.

and probably my fd too.

it might feel alright, but there is no comparison to a manual rack

I have one for my vert if I ever work on it, and my 87TII has one factory.

anyone have a write up on this, or maybe some pics? never really done any steering system work outside of replacing the pump...

jwteknix 01-24-2007 12:55 AM

here you go buddy its really easy i had to use a oild drain plug for one of the bolts though

jwteknix 01-24-2007 12:56 AM

it wont let me edit heres the link https://www.nopistons.com/forums/index.php?...r+steering+rack

THANKS!

ok its pretty easy to do, but whats the benefit? does the steering become any better than just cutting the power steering belt? i know where i can get the manual rack. but isnt that the same as just plugging the lines and removing the pump? i want a better steering feel without the power steering. like on the older S4 rx7s. the power assist steering. can it be converted? bolt up?

Rob x-7 01-30-2007 05:53 AM

plugging the rack is not the same feel as a manual rack.

if you never drove the 2 then you would not think the plugged rack was that bad, so try that out for now and see how you like it.

inanimate_object 01-30-2007 10:07 AM

plugging the rack is also dangerous.

jwteknix 01-30-2007 11:38 AM

why?^^^

inanimate_object 01-30-2007 02:55 PM

Basically because a ps rack is in 2 pieces joined by a flexible bit of whatever and when you plug the holes you put pressure on this bit. I have a rack outside, if I have time I'll open it up and take a pic.

teknics 01-30-2007 05:17 PM

thats why you dont leave it full of fluid.

inanimate_object 01-31-2007 05:03 AM

Look instead of talking about it I'll try hard to get those pics next week so people can see.

If you do decide to do it leaving it full of fluid and looping the holes would be better because you're at least putting back some of the pumps pressure. To be honest I've never actually seen or heard of one going, but it's definitely a risk and if you were to ask me there's no way I'd ever drive around in a car with this done.
