is it worth buying and installing a pov into a tii?

vosko 10-09-2002 09:30 PM

you mean BOV. all it will really do is make a nice loud whooosh. i have one on my TII but i bought it used.....

dragon_608 10-09-2002 09:31 PM

no..i mean pop off valve

SoniX 10-09-2002 09:33 PM

I think he may be talking about a Pop off valve, which is a protection measure, if you make over a certain amount of boost (adjustable I think) it will pop, and dump all the boost immediately, so say you set it to 12 psi, and you have a boost spike that shoots the pressure up to 13 or so, the Pov pops, and you dump all the boost, it is to prevent detonation from overboosting, seems to me that this would be a good thing to have on a turbo rotary, seeing as how they dislike running lean.

yeah, what he said, we must have posted at the same time

i was under the assumption that it prolongs the life of the turbo by not allowing psi to bounce back against the turbine...??

this is true, but if I remember correctly, a TII comes with one stock, the aftermarket ones (like vosko is talking about) are open air BOV's which means instead of just shooting the air back into the intake, they shoot it into the engine bay, usually with a loud whistling sound, the aftermarket ones are really only needed if you are making more boost than your stock BOV can deal with, which I imagine would be quite a lot.

pop off valves are bad because they open gradually, so they bleed off boost and overspin the turbo before you actually hit an over boost spike.

blow off valves come stock on the car, it is put back into the intake though. aftermarket ones will be vented to open air.
