I have an '89 N/A which is racking up some miles and I want to start planning a replacement. I had the car for over 5 years and want some advice on what is the easiest (new to rotaries) and able to:

- get in the 350- 400 horsepower range

- spend less then 4 gs from start to finish

- emission freely (required in NoVA; honestly wont care)

- weekend cruiser

A few years back I randomly meet a guy who by luck was "throwing away" a blown S5 TII. He did 350 swap and was going to trash it. I tour it apart and the blown apex seals trashed the rear housing and rotor.

Route 1: Obviously TII swap (need new housing, rotor, seals, gasks, rear end, etc).

Route 2: Assembled JDM 13BT

Also- what am I looking at as far as turbo and ecu combos.

Please be patient, I am learning as I go.

4 k is a tight budget but it can be done it you find the right used/new combination.

I had a microtech LT10S on my S4 TII swap and it was awesome

as far as ecu you want to make sure local tuners can tune the ecu you buy unless you going to do the tuning your self.

turbos you will need to change your exhaust manifold and down pipe and you are looking at money already not to mention the turbo related accessories such as waste gate blow off valve boost controller fmic if necessary 4 k is not much to work with... 350 through 400 in my experience will run you some where i the range of 6-7K with you doing most of your own work. Im talking parts alone considering that you have to do an engine rebuild. you can go cheap parts but reliability goes out the window.

Thanks. That's what kinda advice I am looking for- just need to keep saving a little more. What kind of turbo set ups would be the best to get in that range?

Have fun with those cops in NoVa! You can try a BNR upgraded stock turbo, they are good for power in the low 300's. Rtek ecu should be able to cover you on the tuning side of things. Find yourself a used exhaust (DP to the cans). Pay attention to your fuel system (pump & injectors). Make sure you pay attention to the limits of these items & get a good tune on the car. Now this is assuming you are doing a TII swap.

If i where in your shoes I would buy a S4 TII motor from a reputable dealer with trans that will run you about $1500

Then you need to either go stand alone EMS or piece together a S4 TII ecu and Wire harness EMS Will be around $1000 if you do your own install. You will need either a FMIC $450 from google.com or stock TII IC but you need a TII hood. Then you need a down pipe you can get a racing beat one with presilencer for $400 so right off the bat you looking at around 3500. then comes the little details is the clutch the motor came with good do you need new mounts blah blah blah... just getting the motor in your car easy $4000 unless you can pickup a whole drivetrain from a wrecked one for cheap. then as far as modding a bnr stage 3 turbo at $650 will get you around the 300-350 rwhp with a good tune that will also cost you for around 5.5-6K you should be able to put together a decent running car

ALL THIS IS CONSIDERING ENGINE IS GOOD. if not add an easy 2k

Woops did not read you have a s5 TII motor with a blown rear rotor you can rebuild that motor and throw it on your n/a drive train till you piece together the rest of your parts..

The cops up here are the finest the country has to offer.

I can't run straight pipes since I need to pass emissions up here unless I get a cat delete pipe and swap when it comes time.

Why do you think Rteck?

The guy gave me the S5 engine with everything (hood, trans, harness, stock coolers, etc) except the stock ecu and rear end. I have an S5 now so hoping to stick with the same series.

Why go with the BNR turbo? Could I go with a t61 from ebay or something to save?

RotorDad 01-11-2011 01:37 PM

I listed Rtek because it will get you where you want to be & they are not overly priced. Rtek will allow you to tune the car, it may not give you the full effects of a stand alone though. The BNR upgrade is yet another item that will get you to your goal while not being to costly. You could use Ebay stuff, I just figured you would want to go with something more on the reliable side. Like 13B 4 UR AZZ stated there are other things involved with getting it all together.

BTW were you kidding about the cops?

Nice call on the Rtek. Have not looked at before, but glad I did. Thanks.

True- it might be worth the little extra to get the reliability.

He did make a good point. The little stuff tallies up quick. That why l I wanted to start the tread to see much the build would cost to smack me back in reality. Starting new I see the simple stuff.

Yea it was 100% sarcasm about the cops.

RotorDad 01-11-2011 07:49 PM

Yeah if you are trying to keep a budget friendly build those are just a few ideas, of course there is always other things you will need. Look at some of the build threads & get some ideas. Megasquirt EMS are another cheaper alternative with more functionality. On the turbo issue the BNR's will use the factory mani as where the 60-1's or any other will need a new mani.
