nice work... the polishing adds a nice toutch to the engine bay too. i'm probably gonna be doing some tb modding soon, let me know how u like it.

1Revvin7 09-07-2003 10:11 PM

I'll find out tommorrow, pending if my backup alternator works, still waiting for the damn fd unit https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683358.gif

I can do the tb mod pretty fast now, maybe 20minutes depends one how you plug up the secondary butterfly rod. Polishing takes forever! I did it by hand and its still now perfect, I spend about 24hours total on the manifolds. I don't know how long it takes to port the tb, I'm thinking an hour or two...

75 Repu 09-07-2003 10:43 PM

My polishing job looks sorta like that on my UIM for the Repu.. Looks good..

Looks good!

pengaru 09-07-2003 11:05 PM

I spent quite a few hours porting the stock TB, but I removed alot of material, and had welds to grind down in the process.

Lets see a pic of yours...

Looks good. You should polish the WP housing too, make that engine really bling https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/boink.gif Probably would take another 20 hours though https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...O_DIR#>/11.gif

This winter I'm going to do the waterpump assembly, front cover, compressor housing, fd intake manifolds, along with front mount ic piping https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

Looks good revvin. I couldn't really tell by the pic, but did you knife edge the centers like pengaru looks like he did? I did on mine while I had it out. Don't really know if it does anything, it kinda makes sense that it would.

pengaru 09-08-2003 11:03 AM

if you look closely at mine you will also notice the raised part in the primary port is gone on my TB, this along with the knife leading edge, and welded holes left by removing the double throttle and raised area in primary port, results in what I feel a pretty good result for the stock TB. I never ran this TB though, just did it then went straight to the TWM setup after spending too much time porting the stock manifolds and deciding they still sucked. So I don't know if this TB helped or hurt, it sure looks purty though.

roadkill669 09-08-2003 11:08 AM

While I was going at it with the TB mods, I did the same thing. If you read any about the engine competitions that they have in the V8 world, they do everything possible to un-restrict air flow. Seems like their solution to many things is JB weld and grinding it away to make a smoother surface. It actually can make a difference of a few hp. What ever helps.

ZenRXSeven 09-08-2003 12:37 PM

How long did porting that TB take you, Pengaru?

roadkill669 09-08-2003 01:40 PM

It depends on what you use to do it with. I was using a 1" drum sander hooked up to a pneumatic dremmel. Took a couple of minutes to do a rough grind, then went with a lighter grit to finish it up. Then polish it. I don't know what pengaru used, but probally something similar.

Just as a precaution for those who will do this, be careful about removing material where the throttle plates seat on the runner. and when polishing make sure you don't remove the black or grey (I’ve seen both) paint looking stuff where the throttle plates sit it you have any at all or you will have a leak around the plates that can cause you somemajor idle issues...

yeah I stay off the periphery of the plates, just everything before em.

I don't know, the project was done over a few days since I had to take a break to have the holes filled @ the welder. I used a plain old dremel with sanding drum and flapper wheel bits. Then after thats finished it gets attacked with some fine grit wet/dry sandpaper, sanding parallel to the direction of air flow. This is necessary IMO because the rotary tools remoe material by grinding perpendicular to the direction of airflow, which is not exactly the surface finish you want here. I don't do any further polishing, after the wet/dry paper it looks pretty good... but you don't know how hard it is to sand cast aluminum in a small closed space using your fingers and a small piece of sandpaper til you try it. Fingers were sore for a few days following that one.

1Revvin7 09-08-2003 09:01 PM

my hands got so tired doing my manifolds https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/wacko.png
