Here are some pictures of my engine damage thanks to Rob x-7. This first one shows the 3 cracks at the dowel pin near the oil filter housing.

This is a good shot of the entire face of the housing. Those horizontal lines aren't supposed to be there. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...>/rolleyes.gif

This last shot shows how the housing cracked all the way to the outside. Upon teardown I found that everything in the motor except for the rear housing was fine. You can also see how the mounting ear on the housing for the transmission broke--it happened before the crack at the dowel pin. I also broke a motor mount a few weeks before that. It runs very well now.

Which car did that motor come out of? Good god man! When you blow a motor, YOU BLOW A MOTOR!!! You must have had like 30PSI and no fuel or something...damn. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/excl.png

That's the one that's in my convertible. It actually ran well after the damage. When it happened the car felt weird, but it still boosted well. Then I noticed the oil pressure getting really low and pulled over. Luckily I caught it in time. I didn't re-tune my car after I installed the FD upper intake manifold, and I didn't reprogram my boost controller. I was hitting 17 PSI in 1st and 2nd gear. So who knows what I was doing in 3rd and 4th. :o Unfortunately I forget to check my maximum boost before I shut off my car. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/angry.png I tuned my car alot after I fixed the motor. So it's doing ok now. 14 PSI is feeling ok.

Rotaryman88 05-29-2002 08:59 PM

Yea...17 in 1st & 2nd means like 24+ in 3rd or 4th, lol...BOOM. That sucks..

so you already have put a new motor in the convertible? When did all this happen?

It happened in March on a Sunday night. I confirmed the crack the following day and I had the motor out the next day. After I got the new housing from my friend I went to T&R Racing in Queens, NY a few weeks later to check out the damage and put it back together. They ported the new housing to match my old one, and I did all of the cleanup, etc. Then we re-assembled the motor. I put it in, and it has been running very well for close to 2 months.

Rotaryman88 05-29-2002 09:17 PM

So what exactly do you have in that convertible, can you give me a run down of your setup...

also, do you know any HP number or QTs?

Mild street port with 3 mm Hurley seals:Greddy FMIC with custom piping; FD upper intake manifold port matched to FC lower, TB, and Greddy elbow; custom Greddy T-78 turbo setup; Wolf 3D, MSD 6A on leading, 4 1600 cc injectors; RB turbo back exhaust with custom 3" downpipe; and some other stuff.

I don't know the HP, but at 17 PSI I'm sure it was over 400 RWHP. There was a review of my car by Rob x-7 a few months ago. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png

Rotaryman88 05-29-2002 09:34 PM

I missed the review I guess, lol...thats a hell of a setup. I plan on following pretty close...I've decided on the T78 from GReddy instead of the T76. I'll also use Haltech...don't have any experience w/ any others, lol. I'm gonna shoot for about 500RWHP though....I'm doing a BIG streetport...and 3mm seals w/ FD internals most likely...hardened stationary gears, etc...I've been reading into getting the motor dowled bigger or stronger, or something like that...any advice on that? Ya know, to keep the motor from stressin...

I have a Garrett T-76(not the same as a Turbonetics T-76) that I'm going to try out. I'm probably going to do a "special" port on my motor over the winter. If it works out then I should be able to make 600+ RWHP if I get my setup right--easier said than done. You can pin the motor, but getting those extra dowel pins can be expensive, like $1000. You should be able to make 500 RWHP without pinning the motor. I have my own ideas for reinforcing my motor, but I have to see if they'll work.

Rotaryman88 05-29-2002 09:47 PM

Thats what I want to hear, lol...good...500RWHP is plenty for me right now....maybe later i'll bump up to 600+

My new turbocharger is capable of 1000 HP, but I don't know if I would even want to attempt to build a 13B capable of handling that. Now a 20B.... https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...>/rolleyes.gif

Rotaryman88 05-29-2002 09:59 PM

So if your goin w/ a new turbo...what will become of your T78 https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...>/rolleyes.gif

And don't start talkin 20Bs w/ Big turbos...I won't be held accountable for my actions of excitement :bigok:

I may try it out on the Midget if I go completely nuts. I'd like to hold onto it for a while just in case a need for it comes up.

ILUVMY88CABRIO 05-30-2002 12:46 AM

Can't you use FD housings, and be good for about 600 hp?

89-91 housings are pretty strong. For some reason my motor had an 87-88 rear housing, even though all of the other parts are 89-91. Either it was like that when I had it or the shop that did the motor 2 years ago switched them. It doesn't matter now.

Ok that's it, 13BAce needs to be banned from the forums. All this talk of pinning motors and 600whp and big turbos and special ports and stuff!

The jealousy is killing me!

Just use your ingenuity. I haven't worked since November.

Rotarydragon 05-30-2002 12:35 PM

Yeah getting to that point, just have to settle a few things first. Namely finding a place to move to that has a nice garage....hate having to move but that's life. My house is in the way of a huge mall they are putting in.

The only real problem I have is a limited parts supply. I'd love to tinker with things, but as I've never done a regular rebuild of a rotary I ought to start there I suppose.

One of the projects I will be doing in the not too distant future is my own engine mointoring system. Not that hard to rig one up https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png

The thing that has helped me is that I save EVERYTHING. The other day I was getting some parts from my friend, and I asked where to throw some garbage. I looked in the garbage, and there were a bunch of good parts in there. Yay, more junk for me. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

The car is nuts, at first when he gave me a ride, I was thinking "it doesnt feel that much different then my car", then being a piston guy, Im saying "it doesnt SOUND that much different then my car at idle", but when the revs get over 3500 or so, and that turbo spools up its like someone punching you in the ******* back, like getting launched from a sling shot or something, the rear tires break free out of no where.. sigh.... I remember when I used to be able to break street slicks free driving 40mph and flooring it......now my car just makes loud noises and goes nowhere ( at least it looks pretty good going slow though ). Like being all dressed up and no where to go.
