Here's the intercooler under the bumper.

Here's what I've done so far. It looks like getting the IC to fit is going to be a bitch. While I'm waiting for the piping to come in I'm going to flush all the fluids (new brake fluid, coolant, oil, gear lube). Does anyone have a clutch to sell by the way?

Sorry about the last picture it was a little too big.

Here's a better size of the picture.

Nice Car..

pengaru 07-12-2003 06:16 PM

looks good, although a little small https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png

I think it shall suffice with the water injection and the Co2 spray if the water injection doesn't cool the air enough. Any one have any pictures of the greddy FMIC tubing without a fron bumper on? I want some ideas and I'm too lazy to look it up myself.

FikseRxSeven 07-12-2003 06:39 PM

wont you be able to stick a bigger stock mount than that?

rmaiersg 07-12-2003 07:00 PM

The core is 3 inches thick and like 25" x 6". It'll fill the whole bumper up with IC fins. Any bigger and you'd need a different bumper to get the real efficiency out of the intercooler.

cut that plastic grill off! i did on my car, looks sooo much better. i can post some pics of mine if you want to get an idea of how it looks. it will show off you're nice new intercooler. and if you're worried about rocks dinging up the IC, buy some rain gutter guards from lowe's or home depot and rivit them on the front. the mesh only costs $1.08 for a 3'X6" aluminum sheet.

you could have just mounted it a little further back. or gotten a thinner one and replace the AC condensor with the IC. or you could have made new mounts for the radiator, gotten an electric fan, and made space for a thick IC in front of the radiator. then you would have had to take off the front bumper. just my $0.02.

I wonder how well it will work, it has a small surface area...

Dramon_Killer 07-13-2003 12:13 AM

better than stock though right?

i agree........ im sure it will be better than stock

Rotaryman88 07-13-2003 12:43 AM

The stock TMIC has roughly a 8"x8" surface area(i'm doing this off a picture in my mind, so its probably off a lil)...being that his IC i 25"x6" I would imagine it has more surface area than a stocker...

also, being that it is mounted up front, it will be more efficient. However, at close to stock boost levels, say 10psi, the extra piping from the FMIC will cause some lag, but by the sound of his water injection or CO2 spray he sounds like he wants some big PSI numbers?...should be interesting, let us know how it fans out...

BTW, i'm going w/ a water injection and N-Ter cooler system w/ CO2 as well https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

Those c02 cooler things should work, atleast in my mind.

While putting on the c02 tank to my paintball gun i forgot it shredded an o-ring and didnt have one on, c02 sprayed out and formed ice on my hand and some frostbite, burned like a mofo for a while.

Yeah...my bro-in-law and I were going to invent something like that about 3 years ago when he mentioned how cold certain bottled gasses vent. If I had, I'd probably be wealthy by now. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683358.gif Well, probably not, but whatever.

RX7Aggie 07-13-2003 10:00 AM

its on the new lightening, cold charged intake that is. they use the AC compressor to charge a small tank of R134, and vent it through a cooling fin (radiator). the intake is drawn over that cooling fin, giving something like 50 seconds of icy cold intake before the supercharger.

My buddy and I were running a co2 fogger on the Supra side mount in in 1g DSM in '94. They work great, but even a 20oz bottle has it's limitations. I wouldn't want to rely on it to keep me from pinging. We just used it with a pressure switch to fog the IC when boost past the 1.75bar level.

His core doesn't seem to be all that small, just rather thick. so the further back the air passes, the less efficient it will be. As long as you keep your plumbing to a realistic diameter, he shouldn't have too much more lag.

rmaiersg 07-13-2003 11:50 AM

Right now I'm only doing like 10-15 psi... ******* boost creep. I want to rebuild the turbo and have a different compressor put on it. At that point I want to boost like 16 psi or so. My dad is doing a project where he is designing a boost controller so hopefully we can make one for the seven also.

According to my simple calculations. My new itercooler has a little over 2 times the surface area of the stock. That is if the cores were the same shape. The core is a little different so these aren't truly correct. Is it 2 times better or more or less? I'll find out soon.

Quick question. What size piping do you guys recommend? The IC has 2.5" inlet & outlet, and the turbo is like 2.something" and the intake is like 1.75" I was thinking I should just use 2.5" all the way to make it easier but would that cause too much lag?

Thanks

I might be attempting this real soon, I got some cores from gregW and my dad has a tig welder, just need to buy some U bends/straights... https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/bigok.gif

rx7machine 07-13-2003 11:48 PM

I was also thinking that intercooler looked a little small.. but looks nice.

cool, good luck
