Check it out guys.
PLEASE for the love of CRAP check out my photo albums cause I have a crapload of pictures of this stuff including sandblasting the engine bay, then the black primer, then the final super gloss black polyurethane paint. Heres a teaser. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png |

I'm so excited! You can see your reflection in EVERY part of the engine bay now! Who remembers what it looked like before? WHO CARES go look in my gallery at what it did look like! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png |

Damn! Looks 100X better then before! ****** noice!
|
Go into some details for us. Looks 1000x better.
I just resprayed my black t2 under the hood with a spray can, and while it does look good, its not shiny like that.. I think I need to buy some real paint.. How much did the paint run you? https://www.nopistons.com/forums/ind...howtopic=38970 |
Nice job man. I cant wait to do that next week.
|
It was sandblasted, then sanded with 400 grit. Primed with black urethane primer then super gloss black polyurethane black on top. It's aircraft grade paint. We use it on trailers at work (because you can hit the paint with chains and binders to tie down loads and the paint wont chip off so easy), so I managed to use some left over black that me and Dan mixed up to spray.
We used a big huge air compressor and dan sprayed it for me. I don't know who remembers but I was whining about missing my guitar I gave to Dan if he would use his skill to paint my car. I'll post more pics. |

Air compressor.
Has a John Deere engine. Makes 120lbs faster than you can say it. |
You have to mix reducer in with the paint.
It's a couple hundred bucks for a gallon of the polyurethane black, and I think a hundred bucks for the reducer. Dan is the expert though, if you have any more technical questions I can ask him. |
Spray Spray!

Nice Job. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png I did mine with the rattle can stuff, came out kinda ok.
|
looks nice

Dude, you are so the WIN!!!!11!!!!!11!!1!!1!1
|
Looks slick, maing!
|
Thxs Colin. Looks like I will just have to settle. I had my white fc repainted under the hood by a shop, they also had to scrub the car. Total cost was close to $700....
|
that pic give me a hard on! nice
|
VERY nice!
|
God damn! Thats an air compresser alright!
|

Rob I'll ask Dan.. Thanks for the compliments guys. I'm ******' psyched about putting my car back together now. |
Dan said he did use reducer and activator.. I don't know the cost though.. It was his paint resources from work he used.. The prices I listed for reducer and the paint itself is just from what I saw filing invoices for other painted trailers at work.

I can answer any questions on the paint. I use it all the time.
It requires a hardener, but doesnt always require a reducer. The two brands I use (Imron and Jetglo) dont need to be thinned. Just mix and paint. That paint goes on very well. Its much stickier than auto paint, and can be layed on thicker. The surface dries to the touch within a few hours, but the paint under the surface layer takes 3-4 days to dry. In that time, its still flowing, so when done right, that paint will me smooth as glass. Not only does it make a super smooth surface thats tough as nails, it also never needs to be waxed. Just wash it wne its dirty. Price? Imron is $250/gal and its not available to the general public. Jetglo is even harder to get, and more expensive, but I dont have an exact price on it. Colin, that looks awesome. I cant wait to repaint my car. |

Thanks for the compliment and posting the information! I was curious though, how do you keep it shiny like this? I find on our freshly painted trailers, if you touch the paint with your finger, it leaves a glossy smear mark. I want to avoid that, but I'm not sure if the circumstance will be different because I'm allowing proper drying time as where trailers have a day or two tops before they are back out being loaded for duty. How can I keep this lusterous shine without getting smear marks from touching the paint? |
Dont touch the paint at all for 3-4 days if the temp is above 70 degrees F, or about a week if its below that. High humidity will also extend the drying time.
|
I want to go silver in the engine bay on mine. How could I do that? What paint would hold up, that can hold up to the abuse of being in an engine bay?
and it looks damn good colin!!!!!!!! |

and it looks damn good colin!!!!!!!! If you do use aircraft grade stuff, be sure to follow the proper precautions. That stuff is really bad for your health. Much worse than auto paint. If you think Im kidding, do a search for Imron on google. |
One more thing I thought Id mention. That paint does not come off your skin if you let it dry. Ive got white specks all over my hand from painting this weekend.
|
take more pics outside of the garage! looks good though,.,,

jetglo is pretty cheap, about $90 a gallon
If your paint is taking days to dry under normal cicumstances something is wrong, I mean if its freezing out its one thing, but after 24 hours if it still leaves finger marks then perhaps you are putting the paint on and not allowing enough flash time in between coats. |

Rob, have you used this paint before? You should know that the surface dries to the touch in 24-26 hours, but the paint is still flowing underneath, and is soft enough to take an impression from a finger for a few days after its painted. And the barely above freezing temps for Colin arent exactly helping to speed it up. |
I paint imron almost everyday, last month I personally
sprayed 11 gallons of imron I think he means the smears from your fingers, maybe because the surface is so clean that every finger print shows up, if they dont wipe off with water then there might be something wrong |

If you leave a fingerprint on paint thats dry to the touch, but not completely dry, and dont wipe it off it can set into the paint. Ive had that happen before. Also, I havent tried it with Imron, but I know if you press down on Jetglow 2 days after it was sprayed, you can leave an impression on it still. In colins post, he specifically said the trailers usually only have a day, or two at the most to dry before theyre back in service. Thats definately too short of a time for the paint to dry completely, especially in Canada anytime except summer. What do you do for a living? Im an aircraft machanic, but I specialize more in composite repair and painting than anything else. |
marine fiberglass repair/painting

Looks nice. Now give it a month after the car runs to turn it brown in there.

Good input from both Adam and Rob though. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png Some newer painted trailers still leave smear marks from your fingers the next few times they are run through the shop (definately dry by now, regardless of how glassy the finish is). Those come off with water though? The trailers are in for service, so I guess I never really tried to get rid of the smear mark with anything other than a dry rag that was in my pocket. LOL. |
soap and water works even better
