Has anyone had a particularly good experience with these, or is it purely for style factor? I need a new battery and it wouldn't hurt to buy a pretty one.
thanks. -M |
They aren't for looks they are for power
Redtop has over 900 CCA or something crazy, I have to recheck the label on my blue RX7. |
I think they are good for a daily driver, just don't let them die. Optima batteries lose 20% of thier full charging capacity every time they are drained, after 5 or 6 times coming up with a dead battery, you will probably have to replace it.

The ones that stay charged are fine, but the battery I had in my 7 and the one's in my father's toys only seemed to last till the sixth recharge, after that they would never hold a charge, not even enough juice to make the under hood light come on. I can't say it's a fact of all Optima batteries, only my experince from the 20 or so I have played with in the last 5 years. |
a buddy of mine had one that nearly caused a fire or somethin in his garage, i was thinking about getting one untill then, and optima wouldnt even cover the battery, he sent it in to them for a new one and they determined nothing was wrong with it and he screwed it up somehow and shafted him

I can first hand tell you they suck if they sit. I had to pull it out of the car and charge it up in my house for 3 hours and then it was fine... My buddy has the same problem. I had Summit send me my 8 month old reciept so I can return it to a Authorized dealer here... Personally I wouldn't get one again. I relocated mine in the back which is why I bought one ( safer). During the wamer months its fine though.. Any battery will drain if it sits too I just wouldn't expect this to do this... 89rag: I think your right. Everytime its dead it takes longer to get it charged |
I think the optima works great. I haven't had issues with the battery no longer holding charge, i've had my go twice by accident (left the lights on), and they recharged quick on my battery charger.
The only grip I have with the optima is that it is damn heavy! Especially for a car that I only use at the track now... I should've just gotten a miata battery since I don't care about cold cranking amps anyhow. |

Good to hear im getting one!

Ya, but moving the battery around means i'm accumulating more preperation points. I race in a PAX/Prep point system, and the battery relocation will move me up into the bottom of the next race class. There is however a grey area interms of battery size, as it doesn't have any rules against changing battery sizes. |
I have an optima and it works great so far. I only paid $84 for it new though.
|
i finally finally after years of putting it off got one, then it got stolen out of my car while i was assembling it! I've heard that its good, convincing enough for me to buy one. Some ******* in Dover can tell you if my battery is awesome or not. I'd assume its the same guy that stole Martin's hawker battery.
|
Now I really only drive the car on the weekend--if that. How long does it take for the gel pack to lose its charge? Is a week going to be hell on the battery?
-M |
i doubt it, i only drive mine on the weekends ususally. and it's outside 24/7

Die Hard Gold has over 900cca, 3 year free replacement warranty and 100 month pro-rated warranty.
I had a 5 year old battery I brought in with no reciept and a new one only cost me $35, its a $80-$90 battery new |
My die hard gold is messed up somehow. It gets good voltage but every once and a while it completely messes up and my voltage takes a complete dump. Its weird...sometimes it works..sometimes it doesn't.
Kinda scary. |

Kinda scary. return it https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683664.gif |
I have put my redtop through hell. It still looks good and cranks great.
I drag race so its relocated to the back. |
I drove 350 miles on a red top after an alternator failure-I was pretty impressed with that...
|
I just bought a one yesterday, a red top, lets see how it goes. If it sucks ill just return it for a new one, 3 year warranty.
|
I kinda wish I got one of those tiny little PC680 or mazda miata batteries
|
WHy? Whats so special about them, actually ive never herd of them.
|
Theyre light, and they fit in the stock location with some of FMIC's(which wont fit with a stock sized battery).
|
Ahhhh gotcha.
|
not to bring an old thread back to life but what model number batteries do you guys have? all the dealers around me told me they don't have any for my fc!
|
I just read an article somewhere on Optima batteries, and the one place they said that they stand out is in holding a charge for a long time without being recharged. Apparently this is not the case, as several posts here dispute that claim.
The only reason I would buy one is if it was lighter (or cheaper) than a standard battery. I know it isn't cheaper, and I'm guessing it's not much lighter. I always buy Advance Auto's house brand. I've had good luck with them, and you can't beat the price. Others are charging you for the name. |
get the one for a honda civic. that is the smallest optima size they offer I think.
|
i never buy advance or autozone generics because i've had them leak and ruin 3 pairs of jeans so far. Have optima AGAIN now, its come back from the dead twice so far... we'll see how it holds up, its got a warranty.

Go Interstate!!

I can't say it's a fact of all Optima batteries, only my experince from the 20 or so I have played with in the last 5 years. All standard automotive batteries are like that. Everytime you drain them, they lose capacity. Automotive batteries are a lead-electrolyte solution... sulphuric acid with some lead plates tossed in. The lead plates in car batteries are spongy, and very porous. This helps to increase surface area for the acid to react with. Well... when you fully discharge these things, a bunch of the lead crumbles and fells to the bottom of the battery. You lose a big chunk of your reacting surface. Do this five times and you might as well throw out your battery. Deep cycle batteries work the same way: lead and aicd, except that the plates are solid lead. They are generally a little less powerful for equal weights, but they can be discharged MANY times... hence their use in marine starting applications. When you drain a deep cycle battery completely, the outter layer of lead on each plate crumbles and falls off, but the total surface area of reactable surface reamins relatively unchanged. Discharge a deep cycle battery enough, and eventually, you'll run out of plate, just like a standard battery. SO...... what does this all mean? If you think you'll be draining your battery, get a yellow top (deep cycle). If you have a good alt and don't leave your accessoriies on, get a redtop. And if you're storing any battery... buy a self-monitoring trickle charger. |
I had a red top left it sitting on a wood shelf for a year and a half, put it in the car without charging it at all started right up. If you leave a battery on concrete it will drain. That one eventually went dead after 5 years. I now have another one and have never had a problem out of one.
|
ok everyone has one every tells me how bad it is and how good it is still never get my answer! what is the exact model number of the battery? because the store told me to get the model number and then i can walk out with on please guys take a quick run to your car and look at the battery and post or even pm me with the model number!
|
i dont run anything in any of my toys but optima... its worth the money... had 'em in all my mud trucks and now in my 7
