Hello all my name's Aaron and I'm located in NJ, I've read through the search engine section of no pistons and still cannot locate any past problems that coincide with mine. I recently purchased an 86 RX7 GXL model from a local performance shop. Before I purchased the vehicle I was told that it did run 3 weeks before I bought it. Trusting the guy I bought it from I was told that the previous owner had removed the 80amp starter fuse in the vehicle and had recently replaced both starter, belts and alternator, and all that was needed was brakes and a new main fuse. Brought it home and replaced the main fuse. Went to start the car(note: car is automatic) Put key in igniton and turned on to acc position. Nothing, headlights work, battery is good, brake and tail lights work, but car will not start. Ran voltage drop test, both alternator and starter are fine. Trippped the starter and the car cranks like it want to turn over but does not. Checked https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/wacko.gif the interior fuse panel and it's onlt receiving power on the top part of the panel. My current diagnosis is there something wrong with the harness. I'm new to the RX7, and any assistance would be truely appreciated. I also checked the theft deterrent box on the passengers side and it was also fine.

i cant remember what the breakers are for but there are 2 breakers on the top of the inside junction box(fuze box) see if there tripped.

sleeperRX7 12-15-2008 08:20 PM

maybe the ignition switch? or ignition key lock cylinder. just a stab in the dark im used to working on ford/chrysler and gm. i dont get many rx7's i havnt had one in almost 4 years now https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub..._DIR#>/sad.gif

VenomStar 12-15-2008 08:41 PM

yeah I was wondering if it was the ignition switch or the lock and tumbler myself, but thats not explaining the loss of power in the bottom of the front fuse panel. Frankly this damn thing has me boggled.

VenomStar 12-15-2008 08:43 PM

FC boy, Breakers? I wasn't aware of a breaker box in the fuse panel, My test light only registered for the top half of the fuse panel.

Baldy 12-15-2008 08:58 PM

so it'll turn over, but not start? or the starter doesn't move at all when you turn the key?

VenomStar 12-15-2008 09:02 PM

Starter will only work when you trip it manually. Nothing responds when you turn the key or even insert it into the ignition. also the bell doesn't ding when you leave the door open.

fc3sboy1 12-15-2008 09:21 PM

yes there are 2 breakers, they have round dots. u sure its not just a faulty ground, there needs to be a ground on the threw bolt for the starter

Fastenough 12-15-2008 10:12 PM

Breakers are for the AC and heat and rear defrost.

Ok when you say nothing responds, do any accessories work at that point? Wipers windows radio etc. This is a GXL and I suppose it has an alarm. Pretty sure you have only three breaks before starter, interlock switch (Auto car neutral park safety) and the CPU Mazda likes to call it, forums call it something else. Anyway it's the black plastic box on the driverside behind the kick pannel. The third break is there and I only know this because my third gen RX (auto) it failed and the car would not start with a key. Took me best part of the morning to chase it down. Alarm sytem interlocks with it. And guess where the dome light and buzzer are? Must say though how did the main fuse get taken out? It's like 60 or 80 amps?? Wires unless cut up of frayed don't just go bad, plugs green out (water intrusion) Good Luck

VenomStar 12-15-2008 11:25 PM

Fast Enough, he the owner before me physically removed the main fuse on the car. Hmmm I truely would lohow to trip these breakers, that could be thve to know e whole issue, but as for the accessories to date the only one that works is the horn. The dash lights nor the radio are currently operational.

First88Rx7 12-16-2008 01:19 AM

IF you have the key in the on position, and you manually trip the starter relay is it any better? I had an issue similar to this and was not able to fix it, there had been some water that had gotten into the fuse block in the engine and cleaned it up a little and it started. Not sure if it'll work with yours, for me it was pry just dumb luck.

VenomStar 12-16-2008 07:19 AM

First RX, I guess I will have to give that a try and see where it leads.

Fast enough, I'm currently online if you have AIM hit me up at RotaryPoisonStar perhaps your expertise might lead me in a stronger direction. If this issue cannot be diagnosed I'm seriously considering swapping in all new wiring and doing the 13B RE swap and calling it a day./\

Fastenough 12-16-2008 09:11 AM

Get a wiring diagram and start at the starter and work back to battery or at the ignition switch, use that test light! Does the car have the factory alarm?

VenomStar 12-16-2008 10:29 AM

yes I believe it does, but i don't have the alarm key fob for it. The previous owner did not give me one with the vehicle.

Fastenough 12-16-2008 06:22 PM

There is no key fob, there are switches on the hood hatch and doors (dome light switches) oh and on the door handle drivers side when the car is locked with doors locked using the outside handle lifted the light in the center console will flash rapidly then slow bout every three or four sec. Worked on my 88 GXL till I tore it apart. My 93 is the same way. Get your hands on another CPU and try it. At least pull yours and look at it, east to remove and the base just snaps in. It may be fried. Fix one thing at a time dash lights may be another problem. Car must have had an electrical problem, or one was created why the need for and alternator and a starter?

http://www.rotorwiki.com/images/6/6e...ngdiagrams.pdf See pages 50-18 through 50-20 do read the first few pages also so you understand the drawing if you are not familiar with them.

oreomike 12-17-2008 01:30 PM

VenomStar, I have a wiring diagram, where in NJ are you? If you are near Atlantic City, I could drop it off.

VenomStar 12-17-2008 04:55 PM

Mike I'm located near East Brunswick, five minutes from raceway park. So Altlantic City is a ways away from me bro. However I do appreciate your willingness to assist. Where are you located? perhaps you could come up and take a look at the car if you have some time. Two heads are always better then one.

VenomStar 12-18-2008 12:21 AM

Update: So I contacted Mazdatrix and explained to them the situation. They're telling me it IS the ignition switch that needs to be replaced, and mine simply just finally burned out. They want 120 shipped for one, brand new according to their parts associate I spoke with on the phone this evening. I'm looking to order one very soon hopefully after installing this it should clear up my issues. I appreciate everyone's kindness in diagnosing this matter. It's nice to know rotary owners stick together.
