I got a new pan gasket from Mazdatrix along with a few others for putting my turbo back on after the porting operation I just finished. I want to change it now since my car is up on jackstands and there seems to be a good bit of leakage around the pan. Other than removing a shitload of little bolts and the motor mount, is there anything I might run into that will be a problem? Is it hard to remove the motor mount?

TIA for the answers, guys!

the way we did it on my friends car jacked up on the exhaust manifold to get enough clearance to to get to all the bolts and remove the pan... besides that you have the right idea !

do some of the secind gens only have a oil pan gasket or no gasket?, it says something in my haynes manual about it, if mine doesnt wold the gasket be better than the gasket maker/sealer?

1988RedT2 11-06-2002 11:05 AM

The Mazda shop manual says you should use a bead of sealant even with the gasket. I don't like the idea of just using the sealant, but I suppose it might work. I'll be using the gasket and the sealant 'cause I dont' want it to drip, and I'm only doing it once! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

we used just sealant because that is all we had. it is my friends only car.had no choice. it is holding fine though https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png

the factory only uses sealer, i dunno why they bother to sell the gasket.

use plenty of silicon, and make sure you silicon the motor mount bolts and stuff

do you mean actually putting silicon on the motor mount bolt threads/shaft? (I wouldnt think so)

A product like Perfect Seal would be better on those bolts then silocone.

Quit your campaign against silicone. Nobody cares if their oil pan looks a little sloppy.

Silocone-mightycon <~~~ I know thats not how its spelled, one of our spanish speaking members can help out, I spelled it like it sounds, lol

But for real, Perfect Seal is meant to go on bolt threds, it would be a better sealing thing for the bolts

j9fd3s 11-06-2002 04:31 PM

the problem is that the bolts go thru the pan so it needs to have some sealing to keep it from leaking around the bolts. the sealer doesnt need to go on the threads, but on the mounting surfaces

True, you can use perfect seal as a gasket material as well. As long as the silicone was run around the bolt holes on the oil pan there should be no seal problem. Perfect seal works really well when you place it on both surfaces to be sealed, then on the threads as well. Used on boats alot for water pump bolts, thermostat housings, and it should be used on all head bolts on piston engines.

what is perfect seal? is it that copper spray crap?

Its a boat product, I believe it is Permatex Gasket Seal just labeled with a Quicksilver/Mercruiser name so they can charge more money for it, comes in a can with a brush applicator, great **** I tell you, looks like molasses.

It sounds like this:

GASGACINCH is by far the best gasket sealer we have found. Of all the gasket sealers we have tried on the non-metal intake manifold gaskets, this works best. It is brushed onto the surfaces and gasket you are going to join, wait till "tacky", then assemble. Works on essentially any gaskets. Supplied in 16 oz. can with brush

Yeah my brother has a can of that **** from Caterpillar. They use it on gas compressors.

I used it on the valve covers of my Trans Am, and they almost didn't come off when I tore the engine down the next year.

Try some thinner or acetone https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png

1Revvin7 11-06-2002 07:04 PM

I plan on doing this on my engine im getting.

pengaru 11-07-2002 12:47 AM

I was just concerned about the silicone used on the actual threads, that **** expands alot under heat... doesnt seem desirable around a bolts threads https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png

1988RedT2 11-07-2002 06:21 AM

One more thing: Since I'll have the pan off, should I put a baffle in there? Something to keep the oil in the pan while we're flying down the dragstrip?

j9fd3s 11-07-2002 10:52 AM

if you want the rb/mazdatrix baffle plate is cool, you dont have to worry about the oil getting on the crank like a pistonian engine though
