I've heard a lot of different things about motor oil and filters, and I am having a hard time deciding what brand to use.

Which brand of oil filter should I use??

Which brand and which viscosity of oil should I use??

Thanks for the help.

I run the K&N's in all my vehicle's. The Napa line is actually a very good filter and they are priced quite well. Stay away from the Fram line and the Penzoil oil filters, they are pretty junk.

the OEM filters arent that expensive

any name brand oil will do, depending on weather

conditions either 10-40 or 20-50

i had the pleasure of cutting open a fram, and theres not much of anything in it compared to the mazda filter.

ColinRX7 03-05-2004 09:53 PM

I always use the blue mazda OEM filters

It's wierd too because everyone comments me when they say "Hey you have a mazda filter. Cool."

Ummm Yeah!!!

I read a while ago the OEM filters were better than the run of the mill junk up here (fram, never heard penzoils were crappy too?).. So.. I dunno..

i used to have a cut open mazda filter, and they pack in a ton more filter than the fram

g_dripht-alex 03-05-2004 10:42 PM

i blame my fram for my blown motor. they have voodoo curses on them. do NOT purchase a fram. other than that i use 20w-50 castrol nonsythetic and possibly this summer straight 50w castrol nosythetic.

ColinRX7 03-05-2004 10:46 PM

I always use Castrol 20w50 with the Mazda OEM filter.. Always always always.. And I change oil every 3000 KMs.. Not sure how many miles?

I don't plan on changing my routine even though my MOP will be eliminated too.

I Prefer PureOne filters, but the local parts store NEVER seems to have them in stock, so I end up with the NAPA gold filters a lot. Both are of excellent quality, but the NAPA filter is rather narrow.

How much do you pay for those?

Last I saw they were 4 or 5 times the cost of an OEM filter.. But then again this is Canada so I'm sure there's some contrast to price..

I have black Mazda OEM filters. Any difference between them and the blue ones besides the color?

FCmaniac 03-06-2004 09:23 AM

I use the black Mazda ones. I've always used Pure One up until a couple years ago. They are great filters too.

4 bux for Superflow

gazellis 03-08-2004 05:32 PM

I use Pure One oil filters.

I still use the same type of oil that was first put in the car in 1987 and what was recommended back then. Valvoline 20W-50.
