I am a newbie here, but any help would be greatly appreciated. Let me describe what I have. I have an 87 base model rx7 with a large streetport TII conversion. the motor I just built had 1200 miles on it. I used all brand new seals from RA, Mazdatrix, Atkins. So here it goes. I was driving on the highway at cruising speeds of about 70mph with light boost (3lbs) then all the sudden my shifter and the whole transmission I could feel was vibrating like mad. I thought maybe my tranny was going out but then all the sudden "clankm clunk, thud" The sound of some thing going through the exhaust or out from underneath the car. so I she couldnt stay on so I coasted her home downhill, luckily my house was at the bottom of the hill. I looked in my engine bay and it is saturated in oil. there are no visible obvious spots of leaking, it just everywhere.

PS, the motor will not start now, its almost as if there is not enough compression

*I think monday I am gonna take the motor out and tear it down to see what went wrong and diagnose the damage and rebuild it

I just wanted to see if anyone had any similar experiences

Thanks

I've had oil all over my engine bay, but that was a busted oil cooler line. Maybe do a compression check?

That could be a few different things. I would def check your oil lines coming from and going to the oil cooler for leaks...

It's possible you were leaking oil while driving, didn't know it, and as a result then popped the engine. That would be my guess.

Pull the spark plugs and turn it over, see if you've got any compression..that's the quickest "poor man compression test" i can think of right now. If you have the time, pull the motor, tear and rebuild...but I would make sure it's the motor before going through all of that.

yah, I will do the poormans compression test and see where I am at, I am certain that the motor threw a seal though, but skeptical of where the oil came from

the only places id consider that large an amount of oil coming from is:

A) oil cooler lines

B) front cover gasket/seal

C) possibly a turbo oil feed

i know when i got my 88 na the front cover gasket slipped out and oil was all over the engine bay cause it would come down in gobs and the fan would throw it all over the engine bay.

my god, I found out whats up, my front E-shaft bolt/plug fell out, that was the sound I heard and oil was pouring out right into the fan causingit to blow everywhere, I think the car stalled before any real damage occurred, now that I am some what relieved I am gonna tear it down and see if anything got damaged and I am gonna replace my RA apex seal springs with the stock OEM springs for higher boost. One more question when you are diassembling a motor that only has 1200 miles on it can you reuse the coolant inner and outter orings?

Thanks

It's not likely to happen.

Just replace them, they are cheap. Make sure you tighten that front bolt...

You don't need to crack the compression side of the engine man

You can pull the front cover and reset/replace (if needed) the torrington/thrust assembly, and put the front cover back on, and you're done!

For the time it takes to do that, get it done, just try it out, run the engine, see how it goes, do a compression test

Otherwise I'll put money on it it's fine (considering the amount of time it ran with "no oil")

yah, I know you are right. If I found a new e-shaft locknut and a new thermal pellet and copper washer I would be set. but I am runnin RA apex seal springs, so I wanted to tear down my motor anyways while I am at it to upgrade to the OEM mazda springs to hold higher boost, cause my car is running about 19 pounds. so I am skeptical of the RA springs.

*One more question, does anyone have an extra e-shaft locknut and copper washer. I will buy it from someone who wants to sell it to me.

*And if I am careful with the inner and outter orings can I reuse them, they only have 1200 miles on them. or if not where is the cheapest place to buy them from cause I am on a limeted budget.

Thanks
