ok about a week ago i pressure washed the engine on my rex, when i went to drive it home from work it wouldnt start so i had it towed home. as soon as it was taken off the flat bed it started. it ran all kinds of f'ed up with a big white plume of smoke and sounded like it was running on only one rotor. now it doesnt start at all, here are the things i have done/ checked

checked CAS both the G and Ne terminals im getting 154 ohms.

checked the resistance on the leading coil and came up with 15.54 ohms

checked that i am getting 12v to the coil with the ignition on

de-floded a coulpe times, changed plugs.

i also checked to see that im getting a strong spark

i tried to roll start it but that didnt do anything

when i crank the engine when its not floded it sounds like its gonna start on the first revolution but on the second, it just seems to be flooded out. when i pull the plugs after it wont start where dripping wet with fuel.

it seems to me that when i crank the engine it pretty much just floods it out immediatly, i cant figure out why though. any help or a point in the right direction would be great

i have some expeariance with cars but none with rotarys

Make sure your AFM plug is dry. I drove through a thunderstorm with no hood once, then I couldn't get over 20 mph, and the thing was dumping gas like crazy (plumes of smoke, strong gas smell). I was drying the car with a hair dryer, and got to the AFM plug. Got the water out, started it, ran fine after that.

defiantly will try. i forgot to mention i went over all the wiring to look for shorts or chaffed wires, found only a broken sensor on the back of the thermostat housing (under the alternator) still not sure what it is( see picture). i also sprayed every wiring harness under the hood with WD 40

Baldy 11-21-2007 10:50 AM

That's a water temp sensor, though I'm not sure if that's for the gauge or the ECU.

88vertsleeper 11-21-2007 11:00 AM

ok thank you. i wasn't sure if it was a water temp or pressure sensor

YAY !!! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.gif i got the car started but discovered more problems, nothing major though for a 20 year old car, it seems my exhaust is DONE!! lol i was getting thick white smoke from my pre cat & cat. my question could these being clogged cause my non start situation?

im pretty sure it could but i want to be positive.

ok so i need and exhaust, previous owner did a cat back so i need pre cat, cat and gasket. im not worried about emissions. any suggestions??

88vertsleeper 11-22-2007 10:18 AM

just wanted to mention that i need the best bang for my buck. im not looking for "the best exhaust on the market" just something to flow a little better but not kill my ears

RotaryVillain 11-22-2007 08:19 PM

if you dont have to worry about emissions you might as well buy cat replacement pipes or the appropriate header/pipe combo but if you dont want noise dont get headers , you can just get the replacment pipes on ebay cheap for around 65 shipped for both although if you got the xtra $ to spend going with the RacingBeat set is better cuz it comes with a presilencer instead of a straight pipe.

88vertsleeper 11-23-2007 07:49 AM

ok. i cant afford to get the exhaust right now. my question is can i go to pep boys or similar parts store and make a temporary exhaust using an off the shelf universal cat? or should i just put a universal straight pipe in. and what size do i need to get

88vertsleeper 11-24-2007 04:39 PM

i went to my friends work today and had him make me a simple straight pipe to get rid of the second cat and main cats that were clogged, my rex fired right up ( damn shes loud without all that restriction). after i got home and the car sat for a while she wont start again https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub..._DIR#>/sad.gif ive done everything that was suggested. i might just replace the injectors and go from there.

i love this car and all her problems but i do want to drive her, after all thats what she's made for

Baldy 11-26-2007 09:12 AM

Did you try the unflooding procedure?

If you need new injectors, I have 4 S4 injectors that I had cleaned and calibrated, and used for awhile, for cheap. Just let me know (send a pm).

Clarks7 11-26-2007 12:16 PM

Make sure you keep it simple. It can get very complicated if you try and second guess all the little things on the car. If you are not starting, remember fuel, air, spark, and compression. You should be able to at least get it started (maybe not running well, but started). If you have spark (check it the old fashion way, ground the plug and see if it fires), do you have air (double check the MAF sensor door or plunger depending on the S4 or S5 isn't stuck), and fuel (start like Baldy said, de-flood it. disconnect the fuel pump (small two prong connector by the tank), remove the plugs, and crack it over until it is clear, than plug the pump back in and crank it over until you see white puffs of gas, than put new or cleaned plugs back in and it should start). Once it is running and warmed up, you can look for any other symptoms.

Sorry, I don't want to insult anyone by over simplifying things, but the rotary's can be temperamental with flooding.

i got her started today!!! YAY!!! but she sounds like shes running on one rotor, huge white plumes of smoke at idle and she wont rev past 4500 RPM (smoke smells like raw fuel). i checked that all the plug wires are on the right plug. il double check and make sure i have spark @ every plug tomorrow. gotta go to bed as i work at night https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...R#>/violin.gif

thanks again for all the advise!

Let us know with each plug, just sounds like you are not igniting all the gas...

88vertsleeper 11-26-2007 12:57 PM

will do, again thanks!

88vertsleeper 11-26-2007 04:28 PM

lol didnt go to bed. rather spend time with my baby.

got her running. pulled the plugs cleaned and dried them checked for spark. have strong spark!

she started right up after cleaning plugs. purrs like a kitten. i figure my injectors are leaking, i put in a cut of switch to check and she kept on starting. im letting her cool down now just to make sure. wired thing i found, by pulling the fuse under the hood not only did i stop the fuel i stopped the spark, humm.

when she warms up she lopes. think i have a bad ( damn cant remember the name of the valve) the one the metal tube across the dnymic chamber connects to ( not the BAC (think thats the 1) the other valve kinda under the TB next to oil fill cap) i pulled off the one hose going to that valve and she idles great no loping. damn a rotary is loud without cats !!! lol i love it gonna take her to work tonight i think if it doesnt rain ( wipers only work on low need new motor already replaced relays)

any way thanks again for all the help!!!!!

It is common for injectors to leak. Often it means the car will smoke when it first starts (more the longer it sits), but will clear up after it burns off. That usually doesn't effect the driving, but it might mean occasionally you will flood your motor when you first try to start it!

Glad to hear it wasn't anything major! Good luck
