I was driving on the highway yesterday and my acclerator starting sticking. which is not good cause the car took off a few times not on purpose. but i took it out of gear and it was just sitting at about 5k rpms cause it was stuck, so i tapped the gas to try and fix it, it got unstuck and when down to about 3k really quick, and it made a backfiring noise and a little grayish blackish smoke came out the exhaust. i was affraid it blew something. the car seems to be running fine and the accel. problem is fixed. but i'm wondering if i should be conscerned about the blackish smoke??? i'm going to replace the spark plugs too. any help would be great.

Thanks

I would check the pedal linkage and the throttle cable. Basically you start at point A (the pedal) and work you're way through everything until you reach point B (throttle body or what not). My friend had that problem on his BMW and i think it was just some minor binding in the pedal linkage assembly or something.

just grab a can of wd40 and shoot some of the linkage for the pedal, if that doesnt work check out the cables etc.

I'm guessing the blackish smoke has nothing to do with your pedal sticking.. but I could be wrong.. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/dunno.gif

i already fixed the pedal sticking, i'm just curious if the black smoke was just a backfire? or a serious problem? cause it was sitting at 5.5k then when down really fast after it got unstuck

WHAT COULD THE BLACKISH SMOKE BE? THATS ALL I'M WORRIED ABOUT?? JUST SOME BACKFIRING? OR AM I GOING TO NEED NEW APEX SEALS SOON?

pengaru 01-28-2003 12:59 AM

the blackish smoke is either fuel or oil or both.

you might have gone rich on deceleration, not surprising, if your car is high mileage the AC&CV may not be functioning properly either.

If you car never smokes otherwise (at startup after sitting for a while? when downshifting? between high rpm shifts?) it probably is not something serious, probably just dumping fuel.

If it smokse at other tiems, and you can identify it as burning oil smoke, it's probably your oil control rings going out.

mods, move this thread to the correct forum please.

was the throttle sticking from a loose nut on the throttle body?
