hey guys. i'm kinda new to the turbo world of the rex. i've got a 88 10th anv tii. i'm getting a high pitch whining noise from the turbo manifold area and haven't been able to figure it out. it happens about 5min after cold start up. sometimes it will go away when it is at op temp. and other times it will happen even after driving it for an hour. the turbo still works fine (no cutting out or lagging). the noise seems to be there under acceleration, but it's hard to tell because of the exhaust noise. you car definetly hear it at idle. does anyone have any ideas. it the turbo on it's way out, or maybe some type of vacume hose is loose. any help would be great. thanx!

It's hard to say. If you suspect the turbo itself, try removing the turbo inlet duct and reach into the turbo inlet, grab the turbine shaft and check for end play and also radial slop. If you are able to get the blades to scrape the housing, your bearings are worn out. Time to rebuild the turbo.

thats a great idea, i'll try that. but i thought if the turbo was on its way out it would loose power, or would it happen instantly?do you think there might be a possibilaty of maybe a vacume hose or some type of valve having an air leak, because what cunfuses me the most is that the noise comes and goes. theres no pattern to it.

Some noises are like that. They come and go, but they don't go for long! I would think that the turbo could tolerate a pretty well worn out bearing and still do its job, it would just get noisy, and maybe leak oil and cause your car to smoke...
