I have an 87 turbo and the trailing coil will not fire after the engine starts. It fires one time upon turning the engine over. I have checked all the grounds on it. Checked power to the unit, checked for continuity between the wires and the ECU, swapped in a different crank angle sensor. tried 3 coil packs. tried a new ECU, and no luck whatsoever. Any ideas? Thanks

How do you know it's not firing?
Are you using a timing gun? If you are, this is not accurate. -Ted |
I have pulled the plug out and grounded it to check for spark. Also the tach is not working. Thanks

I added a ground wire onto the trailing coil pack and still no luck. Anyone know if there is a relay between the ECU and the trailing coil pack that can stop it from firing?

The trailing coil pack (or just the ignitor) might be dead.
The main relay that controls power to the trailing coil also controls power going to the leading coil, fuel injectors, and most of the solenoids. If you double-check wiring and find nothing wrong, the coil pack may need to be replaced. The bad news, these things are stupid expensive from the Mazda dealer. The good news, they are easy to find used and very economical. Check eBay. -Ted |
