1st off, hello all https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png Of course I am new here, so HI!

well, I am looking at a 87 Turbo car with a 5spd. It crunches when you shift into 1st gear if you are not stopped. He says that there are no synchros in 1st gear? I thought this sounded a bit old fashioned to me, and out of place on a car with EFI, ABS, 4whl disks etc. Is he full of it, or what? If it is ok, I will probably buy the car, but if not, no way.

thanx for all your help.

ILUVMY88CABRIO 02-10-2002 02:27 AM

As far as I know there shouldn't be syncros in first gear. First gear doesn't need to synchronize up with any other gear. Crunching should be normal if you're forcing it into first gear. You shouldn't be able to put it into first gear unless you are stopped, or moving very slow.

Bohrn 02-10-2002 10:15 AM

really?? OK, then. Thanx. Just seemed strange for a newer style car. The only other car I drove like that was my dads '59 Chev pickup hehe. Jeez, even the newer (2000 and up) Pontiac Sunfire/Chev Cavalier have synchromesh in reverse!

Bohrn 02-10-2002 01:44 PM

anyone else gonna second this?? It is important for me, as I have enough money to buy this car, but not enought to rebuild the tranny after I buy it https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

Yes, no synchros for either 1st or reverse. 1st is always tough to engage when you're moving.

Bohrn 02-10-2002 07:14 PM

great, thanx guys! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png

If you push hard enough it'll go into first when you're moving. :newlaugh: It'll make a cool crunching sound too!

When I taught my youngest brother how to drive my old convertible he did a 4th to 1st shift at 40 mph. It felt like he had slammed on the brakes. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/angry.png

Holy crap. Thats what happened to my celica then. Ill take pictures as soon as I can. I should become an engine tester, cause if it survives my driving, then and only then can it be labeled as "bullet-proof".

I know a guy who did it in an RX-7. I think he messed up the rotor bearings and apex seals.

My friend Steve always used to shift 1-2-1 when he was learning to drive...that was in my Mom's Toyota, and it handled it fine. I think 4th to first would be a little more extreme.

It was meant to be 4th to 3rd, but you know how spazzes are. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

k, little extra info here all. I fired off an email to an RX-7 guy in Tucson. He has a website, but I forget it. Any ways he replied that all forward gears are equipped with synchros.
