ok any way here it goes. the car was idling and i was waiting for her to warm up and i give it a little rev to like 3k then it just falls all the way to 0. nothing crazy just died. the car has been running great the week before this. car didnt start back up right away and when it did it sounded like it was running on one rotor. so i pull the plugs, wet with gas... sweet! so here is what i check

pull plugs out and press them against frame, no spark.

all the plugs are in good shape.

replace leading and trailing coils (stock, with mazdatrix wires)

check all fuses

open up halwin, the haltech is seeing trigger events. they add up steadily as i crank. it is seeing a 200-300 rpm range while cranking.

battery voltage is 11.97

i pulled of the plug at the coil and checked for any voltage on both prongs. yes they are both getting some sort of voltage while cranking.

pull the plugs out still and hold them against a known good ground, NOTHING!!

what could be wrong with it... i was thinking it might be my power/driver side harness but as they are getting voltage i dont think that would be it. but it is not in the greatest shape. but that doesnt explain why it just randomly happened when the car was running.

help!

thanks-

carlos

weird, you try new plugs? i had a problem with my e11 where the output side of the ecu would lock up, so it would still boot, all the sensors and stuff would show up etc etc, but just no outputs.

ikari89 11-02-2006 09:42 AM

didnt try new ones, but the current ones look almost perfect. how did you get your e11 to un freeze? i thought it might be that but im getting some kind of voltage at the coil from the ecu. i obviously can measure it cause i just have a dmm but haltech is sending SOME kinda signal

oh and to add to the things checked. i cleaned all the spots where the coils bolt to the frame incase it was a grounding problem.

every thing points to bad coil but how would it be possible that 2 sets of these coils were dead... i thought these things never died!

j9fd3s 11-02-2006 09:48 AM

power cycling it usually worked, if it didnt, then letting it cool off did (e11's run hot), if that didnt work we reloaded the firmware...

also if you saved a map or something, it doesnt always save the settings correctly, might wanna have a look at that page too

ikari89 11-02-2006 09:52 AM

yeah its been powercycled alot maybe ill try reloading the firmware...

yup i have checked all the ingition settings a couple of times now https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.gif

j9fd3s 11-02-2006 10:16 AM

odd, its all 4 plugs right? if you draw a tree out on papre; plugs->wires>coils->ecu etc, its either the main relay or the ecu....

are you getting fuel?

ikari89 11-02-2006 11:13 PM

yup all 4 plugs are covered in gas when i pull em

the plugs are good

the wires are new mazdatrix ones

this is the 2nd set of coils

they are getting power

they are getting some sort of signal

the haltech is seeing good rpm and trigger events

the tach is bouncing like it should

there is a voltage going to the coils from the ecu when cranking (unknown but a moving voltage was seen with a simple dmm)

ikari89 11-03-2006 07:02 PM

good call... i will try and figure out exactly how to do that and check em out.

j9fd3s 11-03-2006 09:55 PM

if the tach bounces, its sparking...

ikari89 11-03-2006 10:50 PM

yeah thats what i would think to... to bad when i pull the plugs and put them against some thing i dont see any spark....

havent had to go this far myself, but i think it wouldnt be too hard to trigger the coils by yourself, at least youd know if the coil->wire-> plugs worked or not

ikari89 11-05-2006 10:40 AM

alllrighty firmware reloaded, no dice.

checked the ignition setting after the reload they were fine.

so does any one know how much voltage the coils take to be triggered?

5v?

CGeek2k 11-05-2006 12:23 PM

I forget which wires it is but there is a signal wire that takes a 12v signal.

IIRC: On the leading coil, it fires both plugs everytime that wire sees 12v. On the trailing coil, it fires one plug when the wire gets voltage, and the other plug when the wire loses voltage.

I'll double check that later.

ikari89 11-05-2006 07:33 PM

cool so i just supply 12v to the power then tap another 12v to the signal and i should get one spark correct? when using the leading pack.

BoneT2&Harmony 11-12-2006 12:00 AM

Try changing the plugs and wires, you would be amazed of what that does. Also change the blinker fluid while you're at it.

ikari89 11-12-2006 12:02 AM

yea and ill replace the muffler bearings to... ass

any way i got it figured out.

BoneT2&Harmony 11-12-2006 12:44 PM

hahaha, it was the plugs huh?

ikari89 11-12-2006 04:31 PM

yeah yeah yeah... but i had replaced them allready so unless you can explain the freak occurance of brand new plugs being bad... i dunno what ever... it was annoying im just glad its fixed. you can now commence giving me ****... :(

BoneT2&Harmony 11-12-2006 07:54 PM

nah im cool, just dont talk **** about other peoples cars at walmart. hahaha

ikari89 11-12-2006 08:10 PM

lol i only tell the truth! just cause mines faster dont mean you need to get mad

sidewinderx7 11-13-2006 01:26 AM

its not faster when its not running ... :-o

ikari89 11-13-2006 03:36 AM

lol mine runs https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR

I donno, a few years ago, my buddy built a motor for a customer use brand new Mazda plugs was using a Haltech E6x I think, had the same problem, so he eventually parted the car out.

we had a problem with plugs for a while at the dealership, turns out they would always be on top of the parts tote, and id toss em, into an empty tote, to put em into stock....

the operative word being TOSS

ikari89 11-13-2006 09:09 PM

lol who knows... o well at least i have it fixed... now if only i could find an o2 sensor that worked.

wait so your car does or does not run right now?
