I have a 90 GXL and want to upgrade my suspension. It has the electronic suspension so what stuff do I need to do to go aftermarket ?

All you need is the new parts, it is done in the exact same manner as other second gens (might be a wire or two to disconnect though). The AAS can either be removed or left in place, it won't matter.
I recommend the KYB AGX struts if you're not planning on doing coilovers as they are cheap and perform pretty damn well. Not to mention adjustable. Springs is kind of a toss up and I don't really have a recommendation there, it comes down to personal preference. Might want to look into getting different sway bars at the same time, just because it's cool to upgrade it all and feel the difference, as it will be huge. Good luck. Redwood |
either go the cheapest route or just get some nice coilovers, the inbetween is not worth it, i also woudltn remcomend the regualar adjust springs such as groudn contorll, when your suspension is all teh way extracted such is in you are in teh air or hit a pothole it will rattle and sometimes the spring doesnt sit where its supposed to after your wheel returns in its position. this is what they ahve helper springs for. basicly teh spring shoudl sit snug in the shock body while its out of the car. i have kyb agx shocks and suspension technieq springs, i got this when i just wanteed to replace teh stock blown shocks with some aftermarket ones and just got slightly stiffer springs then stock, after upgrading tires i realized i eneded better suspension. also the ST springs are a little too soft and now teh car leans with better grip tires where as before teh tires let go first. i dont like the agx too much and the springs dotn realyl match teh valvign all taht great but its cheap. i am soon to go with something better such as the buddy clubs P1. just my .02$

i think so too, but i really dont want to run a regular coilover, i dont want the reattle plus its nto really safe. and i donno sho sells just stiff springs that woudl go right in and i dont want progressive stuff.

the k2 coil overs are designed to fall back into place after the spring comes off the perch. |
If you do go coilover, you will NOT want the KYB AGX's though. They are just not designed as a racing strut. If that's what you're looking for, check out ground-control.com, they have some decent packages and are very helpful in finding the correct setup for what you want (warning, they do want you to know what you're talking about too, so read up on terms first).
kahren is the first person I've heard that dislikes the KYB's as a street setup. Hell, I use them on my CSP car coupled with some linear eibachs and Falken Azenis and have yet to have any complaints. Like I said though, it is important to have strong sway bars and if your bushings are shot, no strut/spring combo will make you happy. Redwood |
i dont dislike it all that much, dont get me wrong for the money spent this was deffinately worth while i am just not happy with what i have, i use azeni sports 225/45-17 and i think the suspension needs some work, with negative camber removed from lowereing it just needs some mroe front negative camber and i will go with bigger sway bars, my bushings are not too bad of a shape i just dindt want to go with the urathena ones and last time i chekced stock was a bit pricey.

im at 1f and 2 rear, ive got 400/250 springs. the front springs are too stiff i think, should be more like 350

i used 3 front and 6 rear but i felt that ws too stiff for teh springs i had , so i did 2 and 4 and i think that was also a bit too stiff i think teh last settign i used was 1 and 2 or 2 and 3. the springs are like 130 lbs stock is somethign like 80?

Yeah, I keep mine at 1 and 2 almost always. Even in autocrossing I only go f/r -> 2/4; 2/6 if it's sticky pavement. My springs are 300/225 I believe, but I can't recall at all, too many numbers flying around from switching around on my old first gen racer.

the agx's are excellent. if you take the big jdm names like jic and tein and shock dyno them you find that the adjustment knob is there for decoration, the agx is actually doing somthing. Do you have those Shock Dyno tests? I would love to see that. Tein and JIC and Cusco have put a lot of time and money into testing their suspension. Tein is involved in many aspects of racing and makes quality suspension. Personally I don't like JIC because I have had too many sets just wear out too soon and they are expensive to rebiuld but when they work they are oustanding. From what I have seen most suspension setups in America are of much lower quality construction and seem kind of "thrown together" for lack of a better word... I am not an expert by any means but the Teins I had the spring stayed in the seat at any ride height as well as MY JIC's The current Cusco coilovers I have use Helper springs but the others did not. I would love to see some test of different suspensions though.. |
