Hi all,
Just bought a red '88 conv w/ 120k miles. Love the way it drives, but I'm realizing it has a few problems. 1) Floods if it sits between 1/2 hour and 6 hours. Always fine in the a.m.'s. Almost started replacing the injectors, thinking they were leaking 'til I got on the net and started digging around. Pulling the fuse works like a charm, but if it's the computer and there isn't any fix, has anyone run a wire from the fuse box back to the dash for a kill switch? Just flick the switch off and clear out the flood from the comfort of the inside. I do realize that's a 30 amp fuse in there. 2) Main gripe- waaaaay too quiet. Not looking to dump a lot of money into this car, but I do want to be able to hear the exhaust. Thinking of taking off the mufflers only and replacing them with pipes and tips. How loud will this be? When the muffler fell off my '88 B2200, I didn't think it was that bad with the converter still there and just drove it like that. 3)Getting a repetitive, rotating type noise from the rear. Increases with the speed of the car- not the engine speed or gear. Gets better and goes away as the car is driven. I'd appreciate any help. Thanks. |
welcome to the club. does it flood after running or just sitting at night? rotaries are very loud. u can run 2 3/4 piping for the exhuast out to one or two canisters. i think thats right. im not sure about the 3rd one and y it would sound better when u go faster. this is the place to be if u have plenty of questions. enjoy

It floods only after it's been running. Always starts OK in the mornings.
Not sure what you mean by the 2 or 3 "canisters"? Haven't had a chance to really look under it yet. Thanks. |
Yes I have a kill switch on both my 84 and my 88 works great for flooding. All you have to do is cut the fuel pump out, you don't have to go the ECU breaker.
|
Well u have leaky feul injectors, did this car ever sit for some period of time? its very common for that too happen when 7s sit. And after the car is shut off the fuel pressure is still kept constant, therefore it leaks. That sound you are hearing from the rear sounds like the differential, you should check the fluid level and change it.
|
And as far as taking the mufflers and going strait pipes it will be unbarable. Just remove your cats that should give you enough "volume".

Thanks for the tip. The pump is in the gas tank, right? Do I find some wires going into the gas tank and splice in the switch? Or is there a better place?
|
Thanks for the reply.
Leaky fuel injectors- that was my first suspicion. Can they be cleaned or do they need replaced. I've already noticed they're not especially cheap. Differential- just low on fluid or is it probably going south for good? |
check the fluid on the diff first, change it out... check your rear wheel bearings and diff bearings...
if you do need to replace the diff in the end it's cheapest to just find a junked 7 and grab the whole housing & carrier out of it for like $200 and just drop it in your car. |
I have a diff for sale if u do need it, LSD. good condition. You should just have RC engineering clean them, punch them into a search engine, and it will run u like $100 for all 4.
