I bought a 1988 RX 7 Conv. a year ago with 160k miles on it. It runs great except on cold start up when it smokes. I live in Escondido, CA so I have to smog the car so guess what it failed. My plan is to take it to Arizona where I own a home in a county that dose not require a smog test. So I thought that this would be a good time to up grade to a Turbo II engine. I found a 1987 JDM Turbo II engine that a guy had bought but did not use. It did not have the computer or harness with it and was missing the intercooler.

Well the next day I found a complet running 87 Turbo II coupe with 100K miles on it for less then I had planed to have to spend to buy all of the parts I needed to install the JDM engine.



My question is when I drive the Turbo Coupe it dose not seen any faster then my NA. It run OK and shows boost on the gauge, but I don't feel like it pulls as strong as I expected it would.

Dose any one know some one in the San Diego who I could kake the car to to see if I wrong. Or what I would need to do to fix it.

I would like to swap over the whole drive train to my vert. Or should I use my JDM engine with the coupe's trans and diff. ETC.



One last thing should I use the intercooler and hoor from the coupe or get a after market front mount and keep my stock hood.



Any and all commentents will be appreciated. (I hope spelling dosn't count)

Well it seems like you are trying to compare the compression rates. the NA has higher compression due to it not having any sort of forced induction. A turbo car requires lower compression so that the turbo can function properly or at least to factory standards. Some people even take the necessary parts from the turbo engines and swap them to the N/A engines and just go from there. They are risking the higher compression on low compression components but some people are getting by. You may find out more if you as Leetheslacker about his setup. He is using a non turbo engine with turbo parts. Seems to be doing well also.



the biggest thing about doing a turbo swap into an NA is to have ALL the parts you need for the turbo engine to work the way it was ment to run from the factory. this includes everything out of a normally turbo convertible. Have fun finding a running convertible turbo that someone is willing to part with. They are probably just as hard to find as a 10AE. But anyway, have fun with the swap, mine just went into the shop to get the spark/fuel problem fixed.

I'm not sure what Mr. B means, but you should be able to directly swap the entire TII drive train into the vert without any complications (except figuring out your intercooler and hood options).

I meant the difference between the vert ecu's and the coupe ecu's and also the difference between the vert harnesses and the coupe harnesses. The verts if I am not mistaken have a speaker system in the headrests and well, a convertible top. I am sure they probably feature other components. I my self have not had any experience with the verts but I know for sure that I had to match all of my wire harnesses for my S5 conversion into my S4 chassis. Not to mention I went from non turbo to turbo.

The speakers and top controls do not route through the ECU. Now, if you were replacing all wiring harnesses in the entire car, then no, they wouldn't swap evenly (though I have no idea why you'd want to do that).



I'll need someone to verify it, but I'm pretty sure you could use the TII ECU and TII engine wiring harness in the vert, and all the vert-specific functions should work just fine.
