i am new to the whole rotary/rx7 secne, and i looking into buying a 89-91 turbo rx7 and i was wondering how i can tell the difference between the non-turbo and turbo version and things i should look out for. And if u could maybe let me know of some more sites to go to get more info. on rx7s and rotary motors.

Welcome Goof. Good choice on the year of a turbo model 2nd gen. Basically it should have a hood scoope and say turboII on the rear side of each front quarter panel. Under the hood it should have a top mount intercooler which says 13b intercooled on it. Also it should have a turbo(obviously). On the interior the gauge cluster should have a boost gauge. Those are the most noticable differences between the turbo and non-turbo models. Things to watch out for are cars with really high mileage, that have been overheated, don't have NGK spark plugs in them(meaning they are using plugs meant for piston engines), aren't using 20w50 oil, and just the general condition of the car. Also if the owner says the seals are blown don't buy it unless you really want to change the motor right away. All of these things should tell you how well the car has been taken care of over the years. If you ask the owner about these things then you should be able to tell if the car is worth buying. If you want more info then try going to http://2ndgen.freeservers.com/ or www.iluvmyrx7.com/ or www.rx7club.com/ or www.fc3s.org/ or www.teamfc3s.org/ I think these should do it. If you need any other info let me know.

ask them if it burns and/or consumes oil ever, if they say nope you might want to stay away. in stock form, the rotary engine consumes oil from the engine oil sump by design, some is injected into the combustion chamber. owners who deny oil consumption are straight out lying or just oblivious of the fact and probably havent maintained the car well then.

thanx for the advice, i have been doing alittle research and found some good stuff. My problem is finding a 89-91 turbo, i can't seem to find any in my area. I guess thats what the internet is for, so i can find on else where, but i hope its not to far away. if i do get one it will be my 2nd car and it will my little project car. So i am hoping to get as much info as i can on 2nd gens as i can.

thanx,

goof
