Hello

I thought I would just introduce myself. I just drove home a completely original, 87 RX7 with 102000 miles. It looks great but there's some quirks here and there. No smoke at all under any circumstance, but the idle surges after warmed up and, when calmed, stays only around 500 rpm. It also bucks below 1200 rpm. It just seems like it wants to coast or accelerate if below the 1600 rpm mark. I'll be reading up on the idle and sensors.

It can't be in that bad of shape since I got 29 miles to the gallon on the way home. I was expecting 22 or so. A nice tune up is in the near future as well as sending my injectors to be cleaned professionally. It needs some shocks, too. It really squirms over the bumps. <- basically an excuse for sport suspension, right?

Just if anyone is curious, this guy will never see 19in. rims, neons, monstrous mufflers, or the like. I'm a "no show, more go" type of guy.

I'm not necessarily demanding advise from you guys, but if you have any thoughts or advise regarding my idle issues that you want to share, great! If not, I don't mind learning from experience.

29mpg is really good!

for the idle stuff, check the TPS first, the shop manual (foxed.ca) has a pretty easy step by step idle setting procedure, idle speed, mixture and the TPS are all adjustable

The TPS was actually my first thought. I'm going to check all the sensors' ohm readings soon and check for a nice, sealed intake.

Thank you very much for that site! I guess I don't have to buy a manual now.

yep! i have em on paper, but having online is just handier sometimes

So I think it's my TPS. It will not sustain a given rpm (like staying only at 2000) when in neutral. Also, while a gear is engaged, if a rpm is sustained, it braps. This is why my idle is bouncy +- 200 rpms. It backfires when decelerating, too. From what I've read, this does seem to be a TPS thing. I'll check the ohm reading on it as soon as I get my hands on a Multimeter.

Man, if I had a free pipe, it would sound pretty cool like this... maybe not.

And it will work for mine? I thought they had to be make specific. Hmm... I'll have to check this out.

Were you having similar symptoms?

RicerJ 07-31-2009 01:03 AM

no start that turned out to be blown coolant seals so checked for spark had it on trailing but not on leading went to autozone got the multimeter and had spark when i checked the ohm reading it was good so checked again and had it so checked the CAS and that was good had fuel pressure and injectors were good so checked around and found coolant leaking out and i was just like ...****
