Hi all,

First question with my new engine is.....Any break-in process for an '88 rotary? Mechanic said bring it back in 500 miles and he'll change the oil for free. Otherwise go ahead and drive it like I want.

When looking for a replacement engine, I saw a website that said don't rev it over 4k or start it for short periods for 2000 miles. I think their engines weren't stock rebuilts like mine, though. No revving over 4k for 2000 miles seems a bit draconian.

Any solid info different from what my mechanic said? Thanks.

Definitely keep it under 4K for the first 1000 miles, but 2K would be better. I wouldn't go past 6K until after 3K miles just to be safe.

Easy way to solve this problem. Drive down to Vegas. Have yourself a great time. By then you might have put about 1k miles depending on where you live. By the time you get back you are ready like freddie.

If you live in Nevada or somewhere close.....then do what normal people do and take your girl to disneyworld!!. As for the engine. Congratualtions https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...

the problem with taking a road trip is you don't want to do your breakin miles on highway driving which is alot of constant rpm... the breakin should be varying loads and varying rpm under 4k...

basically just drive like an old lady around town for 1000 miles and you should be fine.

I have the same problem. but my new engine already has 55,000 miles on it and i have heard everything from drive it like a grandma to beat the hell out of it since it should already be broken in. it is a JDM and was shipped to me from an importing company out of Texas. how should i treat my car after i get it back from the shop.

Atkins Rotary has a good write up for break in on their motors.
