My transmission has the strangest problem I have ever seen in a gearbox. The shifter firmly selects 1st and 2nd. When you slip the clutch to accelerate, the car stalls out. Similar to trying to start from a dead stop in 3rd! When the shifter is in neutral, the reverse lights are on the reverse gear works really good https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png.

Has anyone ever encountered anything like this?....I checked the shifter and it was a little loose (those 3 bolts). Still no luck.

i know its a stupid question but did you check the fluid levle n the tranny and the shifter box? are you shure that the shifter is seated properly? that does sound strange. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683561.gif right now i dont have 5th or reverse. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/blink.png there are some strange things goin gon out there.

did your 5th gear grind before you "lost" 5th and reverse?

there is a chance that it is stuck 1/2 way in anouther gear like in reverse, but the shift linkage poped out of the notch and went back in to neutral so now when you go in to 1st and second it's fighting reverse or anouther gear and wil lock the transmission up. try going in to a gear and then see if you can slide the shifter over in to the gear beside it, if it slips in then that is your problem. The hard thing about this is there are balls and springs that lock out the other shift linkages when one is moved in to gear so you may not even be able to do this. Dammit.. lol this is really dificult to explain on the internet with words. Anyway can you only get in to 1st and 2nd? or will it go in to 3rd and 4th as well..? then I'll continue with if you can possibly fix it or not with out having to pull the transmission. Also when it's in neutral and you start the car does it try to move at all?

Dragon 09-09-2003 02:31 PM

Also is this a fairly new engine?

Yep, https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...R#>/unsure.png but I'm not running to the shop at 4:30 am to tear apart one of my trannys to take pic's.. so I'll keep asking him questions and watch shif linkage move in my head till I figure it out.. lol

yah, ive seen roll pins shear too. and linkage jam its prolly something dumb, although if it lost 5th and reverse after having a 5th gear grind, its the broken synchro

It seems that the detent ball fell out of the fork...what the ****?

As i went out of a parking spot, and went from reverse to 1st, the gearbox moved both selector shafts foward. ****

Apex13B 09-11-2003 10:29 PM

i've got the crossmember and exhaust off...now i'm going to bed.

ok dragon..thanks.

The car will not move foward unless the clutch pedal is depressed. I can hear 1st and 2nd gear select (click click)...but the car appears to be in 3rd-5th. It wont move at all when you try to go foward. Just the stench of a slipping clutch

Dragon 09-11-2003 11:09 PM

try this, go in to 1st gear, then pull the shifter over 1/2 way so it's kind of in 1st and 3rd at the same time and pull it back to neutral. this should pull both of the shift linkages back. now put it in 3rd and see if you can do the same thing with 3rd and 5th. It may take a few tries to get them to pull back and even after you get everything back in to there neutral areas you may still have poblems if the shift linkage is bent or the detent balls or springs are messed up... good luck and give us a update.. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/BURNOUT.gif

Apex13B 09-14-2003 07:18 PM

It appears that the 5th and revese fork moved at the same time the 1st and 2nd engaged and locked it up...****

Speed NYC...i'm getting a gearbox from joe within the next few days

I cant spend the time and money to rebuild the one that was in the car. It needs new everything...exept the shafts
