All right I am a 1st gen 12a guy and know only a little bit about the 2nd gen 13b.

I am asking a little bit of tech support for a friend of mine.

He just bought an 86 FC for $200. the thing ran pretty well until a few days ago. He hammered out the cats when a local shop told him that they were cloged. it used to only smoke a little at start up, but now the leaves huge billows of smoke when ever you come from a stop or put your foot into the gas at all.

Now at startup it sounds and acts like one of the rotors has no compression I.E. blown apexes. But after you run it for a minute it runs pretty smooth and has alot of power. Blown apexes out..

He pulled the plugs and they were completly fowled. so he took a wire brush and cleaned them up pretty well. ran a little better. has new Jacobs wires.

Now on the FB's you can pour ATF in the engine and let it sit in order to break up the carbon deposits in the engine. can you do this on the FC and if so how would you go about doing it?

Any help you guys could be would be great!!

Thanks all

That isn't normal, what color is the smoke? I would say he's got some issues, all removing the cats did was make them more apparent. I am sure it was doing it all along, the cats were probably hot enough to burn it off.

The hard start in the morning could be alot of things, but almost all the FC's I've seen with gutted cats smoke quite a bit more, its like whitish/greyish color. I'm pretty sure its just b/c all tha carbon and **** is mixing with whatever and causing nasty smoke, plus, if you gutted them, you might have parts of the honey comb in the cat that is now burning off. I would worry if you started to notice coolant level drops...

i have cats out of all my rx-7's the turbo smokes a bit on start up, but never a huge cloud when pulling away from a stop. My guess is it isn't "normal".

he's got something wrong, its ok for it to smoke for about 10-15-30 seconds when you start it cold, but after that you shouldn't see anything.

why was it $200?

Well the some is the Blueish/gray smoke and there is enough of a cloud to completly make whatever car is behind you completly disapear.

Also the hard start is in the morning or whenever you shut it off doesnt matter if the car is warm or not.

THOUGHT!! on my 1st gen 12a there is a shutter valve for emissions. is there anything like that on the FC 13b?? I guess it kinnda sounds like it would be closing off at start up.

Also if you let the car idel for about 5 mins it runns pretty nice and will just die.

He bought the car for $200 cause the guy that was selling it was a schiester and my friend called him at his game. the car has 170,000 miles on the origional motor. looks like a pretty rough life.
