Anyone with a 2nd gen N/A try this: when the car is off, push the primary throttle all the way around until it stops, then reach up and push on the secondary throttle. On every TB I've seen, the secondaries will move a little farther. That little bit makes them come all the way open, normally they are just short of open. Do you think correcting this would give me more power? Or does it even need to be corrected? I want to know if this is normal, or if it's a problem.

Oh and by the way, what do you do when you can't do the TB mod because those screws are stuck? I tried, but just stripped the screws, and I was using a slotted one too.

you can try using vice grips (sp) or just drill them out, i used vice grips and they worked for me, i didnt do the whole mod, just half assed, took out the butterflies and thats it, but ill get the whole thing done soon.

this is engineered into the stock throttle bodies, if you check the shop manual the explain how to adjust that offset. It's purpose is not exactly known to me but they intenetionally make the secondaries open a little 'behind' the primary. It might be because if you bend the tab that adjusts it so they open fully, at the idle position the secondaries are open a little which will probably make your idle too high.... the linkage isnt quite right.

BTW, good question... I'm curious what others have to say about that one too.

ChainSawOnSteroids 02-04-2003 08:08 PM

you know what im gonna try that, idle is of no issue to me, i dont drive the car often

ill get back with my expirience

I think its made that way, so that the secondaries are a little bit behind the primaries at all times in order to smoothen out the flow of air. This was it would be less jerkey on/off the throttle.

couldn't they have designed the cam so they opened a little behind, but opened fully at WOT? Do you think "fixing" this would yield any performance?

my_jdm_rx7 02-04-2003 09:00 PM

What does removing the secondary throttle blades DO exactly besides a little better flow of air...anything?? And adverse affects? If not I will pull mine when I polish it next week.

try changing it, you can always bend the tab back and set it according to the shop manual spec.

it is there to smooth out the air flow, and b i dont think 90% open and 100% open make much difference, because of the throttle shaft
