hey i was wondering what would happen to a rotary engine when u over-rev it? im using as an example a N/A FC thats y i posted it here...cuz im thinking since piston engines have parts like valves, valve springs etc. they get valve-float when they rev too high. so what happens to a rotary engine when say u rev up to 8000rpm instead?

j9fd3s 06-09-2005 09:23 PM

if you rev to 8k, nothing happens.

1Revvin7 06-09-2005 09:49 PM

The real question is does your car make power up there?

ROTARYROCKET7 06-09-2005 10:16 PM

No he means if u rev it till it cant go no more will the rotary go kaboom like a piston engine would.

I think the answer is the rotary will say, give me MORE

rowtareh 06-09-2005 10:22 PM

Over time, say 10 minutes, yes something will happen. But who could stand that noise at 8k rpm's for more than 1 minute.

You should redline once a day in ANY rotary.

i think the question he really wants to know is , will his n/a throw out flames if he revs the piss out of his car... heh

ColinRX7 06-11-2005 11:18 AM

You can do it without hurting it too much but don't do it

Sorta like when you drop your cellphone on the ground, it still works, and you're like, that was a close one, but then you think it's tough and you keep dropping it and then one day it doesn't work

In that case, you can spin as many rpm's in your imaginary car as you want, it will never blow up!

i found out that there is a rev limiter on s4 na at 8k rpms. dont ask why.

apex//drive 06-21-2005 03:21 PM

There's a good chance one of your rotors might contact the side housing if you rev too high.. and then you're in some trouble.

The S5 is at about 8800 and in autocrossing this car over the last 12 years I use it a LOT

sureshot 06-22-2005 10:57 AM

Your clutch may explode before the motor.

NoeVuh 06-22-2005 06:18 PM

I let my friend drive my S5 and i saw him hit about 8500 when he hit some loose gravel on the road. I wasn't too happy but i knew that once would not kill it.

porsche4786 06-30-2005 08:38 PM

well lets say you happen to have an s5 n/a, what would break first from being over reved? and how many rpm's could the stock tranny take?

rowtareh 07-01-2005 12:09 AM

all you are doing is running the engine with the clutch in. you would not be moving the clutch at all. would you? i may be wrong here.

just the engine is rotating at certain rpm's.

donhayes 07-01-2005 12:18 PM

a seal might go first. But don't over rev and there is no problem.

sureshot 07-01-2005 12:52 PM

High revs?
