A couple weeks ago I posted a thread about problems i was having with my starter. Well, a new starter went in, and the engine still wont turn over. The starter just makes a grinding sound; the only difference is now the tach jumps to about 3 grand when I'm trying to start it. This is on a recently rebuilt s5 turbo. The wiring to the starter is good, everythings mounted flush, and I can turn the engine over by hand. I dont know whats left to go wrong. Maybe I should just sell this thing and get a motorcycle...

You putting in a t2 starter?

incendui 04-07-2003 10:04 PM

yes, its a TII starter. the car was running with the same engine before I had to rebuild it.

That tach to 3k gives me the hint that its wired wrong...

Did you have someone rebuild the starter or buy a remanufactured one? The starter could be bad, I would take it back to where you got it and tell them what is happening. A local battery or auto-electric store could probably diagnose your problem. Just a suggestion anyways.

it a remanufactured one. and while the rest of the car could have problems with the wiring, I'm certain the starter's fine. Theres two wires that go directly to the battery, and then one small one for the solenoid.

Where does the signal for the tach come from? I thought it was from the cas, but then it shouldn't do anything unless its actually turning over.

the signal for the tach comes right off the trailing coil. if you bought a reman starter take it back and get another one, the parts store ones are junk, thats why they have a life time warranty

grinding happens when the teeth of the flywheel and starter are not alighned or worn creating space and free play when starting(grinding noise).most of the time due to a old starter with worn teeth or shimming problems. But since rx-7 starts don't need shimming and this is a new starter. alighnment is not probaly it.

1. check battery voltage .... even go so far as a {SEARS 200 amp} engine starter and juice that thing UP. there about $65- 250. Trust me 200 amps will make it turn over and then some.

2.DID YOU INSTALL THE ENGINE YOURSELF?

-worn flywheel teeth

-improper flywheel torque(you REALLY need to get the flywheel NUT on there) 300ft/lbs is a lot. if it is not on all the way it will move on you creating space leading to grinding.

3. take the "new" start to you locol parts place and let them test it . I have gotten many so called "new" parts that are not worth a dawn.

4. JUMPS TO 3K thats not right. track down that problem. IT MAY ALL BE ELCETICAL a bad ground that looks good or fuse who knows.

5. PUSH COMES TO SHOVE. no really push the dawm car. get a friend to push you car with his car go about 20-40 mph and drop the clutch it should run if not

go to set 6.

6. NEVER disount it being a bad rebuild MOTOR. if your at this point PM me i think that i could help you out.
