I want closer ratio gears in my NA, it looks like theres alot of interchangability between these RWD mazdas. Looking at the miata 6 speed gear ratios it looks like it might be a good match for a built high revving (10k) NA with 4.1 rear end. I wonder how difficult it will be to slap this into my car. Anyone have any experience with this?

Scott 89t2 09-13-2002 09:41 PM

the 5 speed mitia boxes fit... I don't know about the 6 speed ones. if they did they would be alot weaker.

sleeperRX7 09-13-2002 10:11 PM

will the miata 5 speed even bolt up to the stock driveshaft on a second gen?

Scott 89t2 09-13-2002 10:45 PM

no, you take the gears and insides of the miata box, and stick it inside the FC housing.

sleeperRX7 09-13-2002 10:54 PM

ok, i had know clue, 6 speed would be nice if it would hold up under abuse :bigok:

scroll to bottom, in italics:

The sedan is meant to compete with the new Lexus IS300 and is said to be use a all-new double wishbone suspension and the 6-speed manual transmission Mazda first used in the 10th Anniversary Miata. (and from inspecting the 6-speed from the Miata which was in our shop recently, it was obviously designed to handle more power than the Miata was pushing through it. Our guess is that the transmission was actually designed for these new 200+ HP rotary cars.)

I read elsewhere that the miata 5 and 6 speed will bolt right up to the rotary, I believe you just have to get the correct flywheel+clutch for the miata/6 speed. Now, the question is, will the flywheel bolt up to a rotary AT counterweight? https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png Maybe if you get a miata 6 speed aluminum flywheel from someone like racing beat (if they make one?)

I'm heavily considering this modification, lemme know if any of you guys do it and run into any problems, or know of anything that would go wrong.

cheers

Pineapple does this conversion for under a 1000, Banzaitoyota had this done @ Pineapple and said he was pleased w/ it. IMO id do that before put some mini-miata parts in your ride.

you deserve it. your like captain greddy, all the stuff on my 20b ended up greddy this time too https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png .

the miata tranny will not fit a rotary, the bellhousing is totally different, what you have to do is put the miata 5 speed guts in the fc case (not very hard), but this only works on the na tranny, the t2's have a different box.

the 6 speed miata tranny shares nothing with either of the previous trannies, and until the rx8 comes out there is no rotary bellhousing/case for it, i want one too, i had a 6 speed miata up in the air to check it out the first day they came out.

Miata Gears Rock!

90_GTU_jeremy 09-16-2002 11:54 AM

the fc na defintely needs a 6 speed... it would be easier to keep the revs up since if you shift anywhere not near redline you bog

MiataSpeed 09-16-2002 03:14 PM

Dont know about the swap over, but do know that miata parts arent "tiny" and are VERY robust, and over engineered 400%. Can Handle over 300 to the wheels in drag abuse settings and daily driving.

Good luck. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png

i like how the miata guys can put 400hp to the ground thru the na tranny, and the same tranny "wont hold up" to a stock 180hp t2 swap....

Not sure what to tell you.

Ive put 347 rear wheel horsepower thru a stock 5 speed miata tranny for 2 years now. The miata trannys are light truck B2000 tranny's. Im putting almost that much rwhp thru a 6 speed...not as much racing on it yet, but its still holding up fine.

Ive managed to keep mine in one piece. Ask anyone who knows me and you'll find I dont take it easy on my cars...I race and put it thru its paces.

Not sure why someone couldnt handle 180hp with one. Poor driving/shifting?

i was being sarcastic, the na rx7 trannies are the same as the miata, light truck (the m type), and people seem to think they are weak for some reason. what did you do to the miata to get 347hp? that thing must be nuts

banzaitoyota 09-16-2002 09:06 PM

I have been guarenteed 300 HP capability for my Miata/RX7 box. I will be pushing the edge of that limit. I am preparing for the GFH assembly thrash. We shall see soon enough.

As an added bonus I won't be carrying around the extra weight of a TII box! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/blink.png
