The Mazda rx7 GTUs is one of the most unique of the second generation rx7 and the rarest model of rx7 ever produced. While not being the most powerful or known as the 10AE Turbo models it is truly a special one of a kind. "In 1989 the former GTU/Sport model became the GTUs with a aluminum hood (from the Convertible) and a new power steering ratio. Similar to the 1986-1987 Sport/GS the GTUs also had reduced insulation and 4 piston front brakes. Originally the the GTUs was to have a normally aspirated 3 rotor engine (the 20B), but pre-production fuel mileage and cooling issues forced Mazda to go another route. Instead Mazda attempted to shorten the 0-60 times with a new 4.3 rear end ratio and .762 top gear. The GTUs was intended to be a more simple and pure version of the RX-7. A non turbo fast and race ready street car with Air Conditioning and a AM/FM radio the only options and unlike the majority of other 1989 coupes, it did not come with a factory sunroof." Mazda did not release any information as to how many of these models were produced. Throughout the years Mazda has never released production numbers on this rare model. The most accepted rumor to how many were produced between 1989 and 1990 is 100 including restamped models. Over the past 31 years the clubs, forums, social media platforms and these classic shows and magazines have only shown a hopeful 100. Making these the rarest model rx7 to have ever been produced! Outside of a few times featured in random collectors books this model was never featured again. While there are several threads and a few featured in magazines there is not a thread devoted to the finding and authentication of the models.

Yes, there is a list and I think it is a great piece of history showing the possible found models. However it lacks any requirements for there to be proof the claims made and be on the list. Backed by years of the community's GTUs owners showing the defining differences between the GTUs and all other models is the door ID tags. The Turbo II was the only model to come with 16" rims besides the gtus. The vin number for all non turbo models is defined by 331, the turbo model is 332. If the door ID tags show it came as a Turbo II 16" rims while having the non turbo vin number. I would assume this is the most thorough way as the GS identification for custom dealer orders, and the gtus model being just that can have other models vins mistaken for gtus models as seens here: https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-gen-gene...il-fc-1129229/ The rumors about the 100 restamped models are not accurate. The inaccuracy occurred when the possible production numbers were assumed to be the restamped production numbers. In fact there are only 100 total made and released by Mazda. Not all have been found. Admins and moderators, enthusiasts and the owners list have shown there are not enough. For over 31 years this car has been released and people have been searching for them. Through all those years sightings of potential GTUs models have not brought 100 in total.
