My S4 vert had a stock CD player in it. As for speaker locations, and sizes....

4" under dash

6" in the doors

6" in the rear hatch

3 1/2" in the headrests (For the Convertibles only)

In most '86~'88 coupes, there are no door speakers at all. The holes for them have to be cut, which means cutting through metal.

If the car has p/windows, then the best place for 6˝" spkrs is right where the window cranks would have been, if it had them. ...Got that? Okay. I found that in this location, you get the best stereo imaging from them, and that they can be up to 3" deep with no clearance problems. This is the ideal situation –far better than the downward firing 4" dash speakers. And, no matter what kind of speakers you put in the factory dash location, they will not sound as good as 6˝" door speakers.

If you do have window cranks, then you have a little bit of a problem. ...But nothing that can't be handled. Since, obviously, you can't mount them where the cranks are, and since you have to allow for the sweep of the handles (plus your knuckles), the only place to mount the speakers is the extreme lower front corner of the doors (theres plenty of room in the lower rear corners too, but they don't sound good there), but the problem w/ this is that the window tracks are right there, allowing you only about an inch and a half clearance! So, you can only cut a little bit of metal, since one of the track's mounting bolts is right in the way too, and can not be eliminated, and you have t use ring spacers for the speakers. This is what I had to do. ...A lot of work, but very well worth it. You should hear this thing!

And, of course, 6˝" speakers drop right into the rear strut towers, in the factory locations.
