Would a lower temp thermostat be a beneficial piece for my rx? Cuz i heard that a lower temp thermostat will make my engine run cooler, which means more power:burnout: But i heard that it would not allow it to run at its specific engine warmed up temp, which would be bad:cry: And its kinda wierd that no Rx-7 specific performance company or store sells a lower temp thermostat. Does anyone have any advice?

I have an 88 TII and I put the lowest temp thermo (don't remember exactly what it was, been almost a year) in it that autozone offered and it ran fine for a couple months, but then I got my miss fire problem.... don't think it's related to the thermostat though, too random to have anything to do with it...

If they don't sell a lower temp thermostat at your local parts store I would bet they can order one for you unless there just plain isn't one available. How low are you talking?

Well, I took a thermodyamics class which focused on automotive appication. Keeping the engine around 180F is best because at lower and higher temps, the metal removal rate is greater. It increases to something like 1/10,000inch per hr were the seals meet the engine walls. This is compared to 1/50,000inch per hr when its runing normally. This is why the engines need to be at 180F aprox instead of 210F or 165F. As for oil cooling, getting the oil up to 220F quickly is good for two reasons, it removes the gas that gets in the oil and is less viscous causing less friction.
