Yesterday i had a massive, rapid (10 min) loss of coolant. my 86 GXL is in the shop now, awaiting diagnosis. i had not overheated and am hoping for the best. i saw a title of a Mazda Technical Service Bulletin (EOO194 Oct.94) titled "Coolant -Propylene Glycol Based not recomended. What should i have them fill up with?

Thanks to the guys to chatted with me last night.

SoRRoW 08-02-2002 10:34 AM

Maybe bad coolant seals inside?

Dam where was I last night? :P

judy 08-02-2002 11:24 AM

Coolant seals inside where?

Here is what happened. Car ran fine all day, it oddly stalled once, but i did not think much of it as i had the wheels in a sharp turn and i have had that happen before. Had been driving stop and go for about 5 hours. No overheating. On the last trip i parked and came back within 10 minutes a large pool of antifreeze was on the pavement. i checked the resovoir and it was at the full line, not above or below.

Saw there was a spray pattern of antifreeze on the internal parts (over radiator etc. ) but no definate place that i could see it had come from.

Walked to a station and they came and had a peek and said "drive it over here". i hesitated but started the car, within 10 sec the alarm went off and the "add coolant light" was on.

Towed it to a import repair shop. He just called with the preliminary findings. He says i was down about a pint of antifreeze only, and after topping it he ran it w/o it running hot or any other signs of what had happened.

i had asked him to put his smog detector device to the coolant and check for hydrocarbons. it was negative. Thats the good news for me.

Now he is going to run compression on the coolant system and check the seal of the thermostat.

This is the first time using this repair shop. It's hard being a girl with a car.

Ps. i dont know where you were last night either

hi JUdy good to see your a member now

Rotarydragon 08-02-2002 11:58 AM

Heater hose is a likely suspect, I just redid mine.

The other hose that gets everyone sits under the intake manifold. Lots of labor to get it done unforunately.

As for coolant, I've used the green stuff all thist time dunno about others.

ROTARYBABE 08-02-2002 05:40 PM

Hi Judy. I'm a girl too. Surprise, surprise.

As far as a technical name for the coolant im at a loss but, a coolant that is aluminum save is usually recommended. Ask @ your local parts house...

evilT2 08-02-2002 06:46 PM

use ethylene glycol based instead?

just look at the packaging. luckily it sounds like you only broke a hose which should be a cheap and easy fix https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png

Got a second call from the shop. I'm getting scared again.

He can't find any evidence of a bad hose and the the water pump spins. He had a problem getting the radiator cap off~the bolts were froze up. What confused me after we talked was he said he did the analysis to see if there were combustion gases in the coolant. From what place is this done?

Also i seem to remember him saying he did a compression check on the cooling system, doesn't this happen from the radiator throat? If he couldn't get the cap off......

He is thinking the fluid came out of the overflow resovoir. This really has me paranoid. What else but bad O's would make it shoot out of there? What is the story on "seeing" bubbling in the overfow? What would it look like.

So he is off for the weekend and will resume on Monday.

What could it be?

What a dissettling way to spend the weekend.

What coolant do all of you use? i'm not going to be the first to put EG in. Anybody use Redline's Water Wetter ?

Thanks for the welcome to the group, and watching out for me. Nice to see other girls here, boys don't scare me though. Good to mix a little left and right brain occasionally.

vosko 08-02-2002 10:15 PM

i use prestone antifreeze, it doesn't really matter as long as its the right type. if the radiator cap fails it can cause the overflow to spill over. generally they take some coolant and use the special tester to see if there is exhaust in it. was the only place coolant was leaking was from the overflow reservoir ? its possible an oring on the intake manifold could have broken too.

judy 08-08-2002 02:25 PM

All that angst! It was indeed the radiator cap!

i have been a bad girl, i promise never, ever, ever again to let it slip by me to add that to my maintainance! The bolts had siezed on the neck and i was not sure what to do so i put it on back burner.

When he installed it the temp dropped to well below the half-way mark on the gauge.

And he performed all the tests to quell my fears that it was anything more serious.

Thanks for putting up with me, and for all the tips.

ps...this is my 49th post vosko

judy 08-11-2002 09:37 AM

This is the NPG coolant:

http://www.evanscooling.com/index2.html

Has anyone used it?

i see that Pineapple Racing advertises it:

http://www.pineappleracing.com/Prod-EvansNPG.html

banzaitoyota 08-11-2002 11:25 AM

I use it. I swear by it.

Rob swears by it to. A lot of 3rd gen guys and gals run it.

You just got to flush and purge the system correctly to use it. If you would have come to the August SC RX7 club meet at my place we could have showed you! John https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...R#>/mellow.png
