I have a 1986 RX-7 that hasn't ran in about 5 years. It's been sitting in my driveway because after I bought it, it ran fine for about two weeks. Then, it seemed that whenever I drove it somewhere, I couldn't get it to start again without alot of time and effort. Anyhow, I tried several times about 5 years ago to get it running, but without any luck. Back when I first put her into hibernation, I could get her to start when she hadn't been touched in a couple days, but once she started, she would die within a minute.
About two weeks ago, I decided it was time to try and bring her back to life. I changed the oil/filter, got a new battery, drained the fuel system and put in some fresh gas, and figured I'd diagnose the problem in no time !!! I guess I was wrong !!! First, I couldn't even get the motor to turn over, and I couldn't figure out why. After reviewing some on-line advise, I started taking a hard look at the Battery Cables and associated wiring. I rewired both the Positive and Negative cables, and also wired up a suggested additional grounding system. Without explaining everything, I finally traced the problem down to a Starter Motor that had some worn brushes and a dirty commutator. Ahh, now she would at least turn over !!! Funny...Once you turn the key, she immediately starts, but dies within about 15 seconds !!!! After that, you can't get her to start again unless you pull all of the plugs and dry them thoroughly. Even then, you get the same result...about 15 seconds of run time !!! I've tried with diligence to try and diagnose the problem using my trusty Haynes manual, but I still haven't had any luck. In addition, I tried to check the Leading/Trailing Coils as mentioned in the Haynes manual for resistance, but once again I'm baffled. The Haynes manual say's I should get a reading of 0.2 - 1.0 ohms across the primary terminals, but I get 0.00 !!!! Also, I tried to check the Crank Angle Sensor, where I'm supposed to get 110 - 220 ohms, and once again I get 0.00 !!! That really baffles me !!!! I guess the only thing that I've noticed that seems really strange is once she starts for her few precious seconds, I pull all of the plugs, and find that the Upper plugs are literally soaked in fuel, but the Lower plugs are fairly dry?? I'd really appreciate any feedback/hints you could give me. I really want to get this car running again, and I hope to try and restore her. Any suggestions??? Thanks, Scott |

Have your injectors cleaned at a Diesel shop or better still get some good used ones. They are fairly cheap. You are flooding big time.

IT could posibly be your water thermo sensor.
(located behind waterpump). I was having this exact same problem. thats what my prob was. |
if you are aren't getting the recommended resistance through the coils then aren't they fried?
|
yea, it sounds like ur flooding harcore. One reason for this could be your coils. They arent sending enough spark to the plugs because of no resistance. Go to a junk yard, or search online for some coils, and get your injectors either cleaned or change em.
The Parts trader Try that site if you havent been there, Too much stuff people wanna get rid of...=) |
your problem could be a multitude of things: like your afm, ecu, injectors, or your ignition wiring being grounded somewhere. if i would start with the harness and check for any grounded wires or bad connectors. then i would check the afm( air flow meter ) to see if its sending a good signal and/or if its working. then check your injectors to see if they working correctly or working at all. then the ecu to see if its fried or not and if all else fails, take her to get a diagnosis done it might cost you more than you want to spend but like i say " if you love her, she's worth the money" https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png
