I am going to look at a 1988 RX7(non-turbo) tomorrow. I have a good idea of what to look for as far as body, suspension and such. The problem is that I have no experience with rotary engines. I was wonering what type of thing I should be looking for that may indicate problems. Any input would be greatly appreciatted.

I myself would look for bad compression. You can get a compression tester from AutoZone or whatever auto joint you have around you. Then I would check for leaking coolant, oil of course. Take it for a test drive for about 25 mins or so, if you like it, buy it.

Just look for significant things wrong with it. Has it been modded? Exhaust, fuel system, upgraded ECU,is it a ported motor, how many miles are on it.

There is really nothing wrong with the N/A rx-7s. You usually will broke an apex seal, not a coolant seal. I am not saying burning through a coolant seal is impossible, but it is not something to usually be worried about. If it has alot of miles. Above 160000 I would consider a rebuild soon, just in case. People have had them last for over 200,000 miles. But rarely you will see it.

Good luck and hope this helps.
