The other day, I was going around a turn, hit a bump, and nearly swerved into oncoming traffic. That's when I decided it was time to stop being cheap, and get the damn bushings.

I've bookmarked pegaru's install page, and mazdatrix's install page. Any special tools I should get? Any idea which sockets I should use? Should I use soap or some other lubricant? Any other tips would be appreciated.

75 Repu 09-22-2003 03:09 PM

how much Baldy?

Baldy 09-22-2003 03:14 PM

The pair was $40, if that's what you're asking. I'm not sure how much shipping is, racing beat doesn't tell you at the time of order.

75 Repu 09-22-2003 03:15 PM

Cool.. I have been thinking of eliminating that thing.. I hate it when I am going hard around a twisty road because the rear suddenly swerves out more..

neevosh 09-22-2003 03:18 PM

It's pretty straight forward. Just follow the how-to's and you should be OK. I left my dust shield on when I did mine. Also, a press makes it much easier to do. I tried with some sockets and bolts, but I couldn't get that thing to budge.

winger 09-22-2003 05:13 PM

yeah......they're easy to install...with a press!

foopy 09-22-2003 07:52 PM

ugh, i hate to ask:

wut are bushings and wut do they do?

Apex13B 09-22-2003 10:23 PM

foopy needs to get his hands dirty

Baldy, you might need to have a shop press them out for you.

I made my rear steer elim bushings out of delrin and a steel insert at work https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

Being kinda stubborn, I'm gonna try and do it myself first. After hurting myself and breaking some stuff, I'll then take it to a shop.

Foopy, think of it like this. Under your car, a lot of suspension parts move all the time. When one metal part is connected to another metal part, you'd have metal on metal rubbing. You would hear screeching all the time, or you'd have to get under your car and grease everything all the time. So, where metal parts meet other metal parts, there is section of rubber mashed between them. As you could imagine, this rubber would wear out over time. This would allow more play in all these connections, so people replace them.

Another thought, bushings are like cartilage in your joints. If the cartilage wears out, bone rubs on bone. That's bad.

If someone else can think of a simpler explanation, feel free to add/amend.

You are going to love how the cars handles after you do this.

Save your stubborn ass some time and frustration after you take them off get them pressed out.

You might want to buy a urethane bushing set for the rear of the car while you have it apart.

Yeah, I just gotta save up some money. I'm really trying not to spend any money, I just had to do this to keep from dying while driving. I plan on eventually replacing all the bushings, as soon as I can afford the time and money.

That's also why I'd like to take a crack at it myself, to save money. If I can find sockets or something that fits correctly, I have an impact wrench that should be able to force them in/out.

RX7Aggie 09-23-2003 01:02 PM

mine have been sitting in the box, along with my rear control arm and control link bushings for the past 6 months. i haven't had the time to take them out. some things are hard to do in one day when you rx-7 is your daily driver. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...O_DIR#>/11.gif

maybe i'll get time over the christmas break...

MazdaEnthused 09-23-2003 01:14 PM

i dont know exactly how the car handles before them because i put the toe eliminators in before i got a chance to drive the car... but they arn't easy you need a press or what ever and a large vise... believe it or not i broke a table mounted vise trying to get those ****** things in

Baldy 10-02-2003 03:27 PM

I'm getting them back from the machine shop this afternoon. I printed out the mazdatrix instructions, and gave it to them. Hopefully they didn't do it upside down or something stupid like that.

They're also turning my rear brake rotors, so that ought to be nice.

Travisty 10-02-2003 03:33 PM

i gotta get mine done as well

vosko, rxchx7, and myself all bought them at the same time.

rxchx7 is doing his now though so we are using him as a guinea pig.

Baldy 10-02-2003 03:36 PM

you guys are probably going to find some easy/cheap way of doing it, now that I'm forking over the cash https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683664.gif

ZenRXSeven 10-03-2003 01:05 AM

I am SOOOOO glad I've already installed these and gotten it outta the damn way.

Baldy 10-03-2003 08:31 AM

Mine all done, back from the shop. I just need to put it all back on the car, but busy planning/prep for b-day party.

The only thing the shop was unclear on was how far in to put the center steel insert. He made the lip flush with the end of the bushing (thinner portion protruding), and it looked good to me. I guess I'll find out for sure when I go to install everything.

Baldy 10-06-2003 08:32 AM

Everything went together (mostly) without problem. Instead of my rearend feeling like it's made of jello, it now feels solid https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/bigok.gif .

The one problem: After getting everything back together, the right rear hub spun by hand easily, whereas the left one was difficult to spin, and very tight feeling. The only change to the brakes was that I had the rotors turned smooth. I decided to put the wheels on and drive it anyway. While driving, I didn't notice anything unusual.

Pulls to the left when cruising (I need an alignment+tires), and pulls slightly to the right when braking, but it's done that before the bushing change (probably need all new pads, and front rotors turned).

SilverTurbo 10-21-2003 10:54 PM

Doing the same on my 7. Did you replace the small black plastic washers in top hub during the install? Mazda calls them "stopper bushings" Part # FB01-26-335. Broke mine and wondered if they do anything.

bacca 10-22-2003 01:49 AM

ok i'm semi-new. do all rx7s have that problem or just some motels

https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683561.gif I don't remember seeing those. Can you get a pic?

yeah he did them and broke the bolt for the hub and STOLE IT OFF MY CAR!

i'm gonna yell at him till he gets me a new one

Baldy 10-22-2003 09:50 AM

Is this a Tii thing? I just had the 3 nuts/bolts for each hub assembly. What are you doing to break these?

vosko 10-22-2003 10:06 AM

i dunno it was stuck or something and he snapped the head off so my car was on jackstands and he wanted to racing the next day so i told him he could borrow mine but of course he hasn't gotten a new one yet for my car

I've got spares aplenty, if it comes down to that.

vosko 10-22-2003 10:18 AM

i'll make him do it tomorrow or else i'll just take back the one for my car and let him get one himself for his own car

SilverTurbo 10-22-2003 11:14 AM

Circled it in the photo, Black, Plastic and is a washer. I ordered them anyway. I think it stops the hub from rubbing against the cast housing.
