Just got my first rotary

Hello nopiston users, I just traded a bombed out e36 for a slightly less bombed out 86 rx7. I have no prior experience with rotaries and don't have a lot of money for expensive upgrades. Any one got any tips or any mods for little dough? Any advice for these things are also appreciated

Welcome to rotaries. They are very different from piston engines. Think 2 stroke engines like on a leaf blower or a weed eater. Mazda included an oil injection system whereby a small amount of engine oil is injected into the combustion chamber to lubricate the internal seals. Rotaries aren't afraid of high RPMs. In fact most RX7 owners suggest taking the rpms up to redline on occasion.

First things first; make sure you change the oil regularly, and by regularly, like every 3500-4000 miles. You don't need to use synthetic oil. A good-quality dino oil will work just fine. I have always used Castrol GTX.

If your car has a manual xmission, then change the oil there too. Differential too while you're at it. Again, no need to us synthetic. NEO and Royal Purple are good xmission oils to use.

You only need to use regular gas. High octane gas in a rx7 is a waste of money.

Get this done before you start thinking about mods

You should also change the spark plugs. NGK standard OEM's are fine. You will need two "L" and two "T". "L" for leading; these go into the two lower plug holes. "T" for trailing; these go into the two upper plug holes.

Check the timing; marks are on the pulley. Adjust idle to 750. Set the TPS. If a lot of this seems like Greek, then get a Haynes manual for the S5 RX-7.
