Turbo II 05-21-2002 02:42 PM

Would I be able to drop a 20B in my 88 TII?

B) With desire and lots of money, all things are possible.

Yea...got to get the engine mounts, harness, ECU, 3rd gen tranny most likely, you'll have to shift everything 6"(cut the firewall, etc) back to make room for the motor...Peter Farrel supercars charges about $15K to do it...its not cheap, but worth the payout.

ah, i know Pettit Racing makes a drop in 20B for 3rd gens, w/o cutting, but i don't know about FC's.

I don't think it's worth hacking up the firewall to make the motor sit back like stock. Just do some suspension tuning to get good weight distribution. If you just mount the motor to the stock transmission it will sit about 7" more forward than stock. That will cut down on space for the radiator, and unless you want to move the radiator forward you'll have to use an electric fan. You'll have to make some custom mounts. K2RD sells some for $430. That's not a bad price considering how much it would cost for a shop to do it. If you can weld and bend angle iron then you could probably do it yourself for about $50.

A TII transmission handles 500 HP pretty well. So unless you plan on drag racing the 20B alot a TII transmission and rear would do the job. If you're after alot more power then you'll have to go with a custom transmission setup. 3rd gen transmissions are about the same as 89-91 TII transmissions internally. Doing the work necessary to fit one in would be a waste of time.

There is ALOT more to the conversion than just mounting everything. All of the peripherals make it very expensive. You'll definitely need a good front mount intercooler, as well as a good radiator. You'll also need an ECU to run the thing. In my opinion trying to get the stock Cosmo ECU to work with it is a waste of time. Anybody putting a 20B in to get 300-400 HP is wasting their time. The same can be had from a 13B very easily. Don't forget the fuel system.

The stock 20B water pump will hit the hood. You'll have to figure out a way around that. I've seen people put a 2nd gen water pump housing on the motor, but I don't know if it has the same capacity as the 20B pump.

If you're going to use the stock twin turbos then you'll need to run them in parallel and make a custom downpipe. Otherwise you'll have to go with a custom turbo setup.

I'm sure that they charge alot more than $15K to do an "out the door" 20B installation. They charge close to $3000 just to install and tune a TEC II. :o
