So, since I have the UIM off to fix a fuel leak, I took a look at the injectors - as far as I know they've never been cleaned, so I'll be sending them off. Since I have an 88, they should have square purple tops with an offset slot - but i have red square centered ones. the part number is the same on the side as what i'm suppsoed to have tho. <shrug> they work, so I'm not too worried. What I am worried about is the air bleeds. most of the holes are sealed shut with a thick amber layer of... something. Should I try cleaning them (and what should I use), just buy new ones (mazdatrix says $40 each!!!), or can i just run without? I don't think they're doing any good currently and the car seems to run fine.

I would at least try to clean them.

Handle them carefully. They are fragile.
Spray carb cleaner & paper towels should clean them. (I suspect one of my secondarys is starting to leak also.) |
Put new o-rings in everything once everything is cleaned, be careful with that carb cleaner, it is corrosive and can damage the air bleeders.
Buying the new set(s) of bleeders and o-rings wouldn't be a bad idea imo, yes it is kinda spendy but chances are your current ones will not survive the removal, cleaning and re-installation process. |
a can of carb cleaner later and they looked better. at least i could see through the holes. put everythign back together and the car runs great, so...

having heard and been told that you pretty much can't take them out without breaking them (unless you're really lucky) I left them in. Pulled the injectors and sprayed the air bleeds from both sides with carb cleaner. I ended up using almost a whole can on just the two in the UIM. Forgot to snap a pic of what they looked like when i was done - I'll try to remember when I pull it apart again to send the injectors off to be cleaned.
I don't know what the end result would be if you pulled them out and left them out. the injectors should do the job of atomizing the fuel by themselves.... I was hoping someone wiser than I would have some input the idea. I can't help but think that by placing something - even something with a grid of holes - in the path of the injectors like that all that would occur is the fuel droplets would build up and eventually start dripping off it in larger than ideal droplets. I suppose you'd have a similar problem if you removed it with build-up on the wall of the LIM opposite the injector, though. |
the purple injectors are the 86-87.5 t2 low impedance jobbers

So is the chart from Rotary Resurrection wrong?

Was just scrolling through the forum and came by this thread. I have a REW engine that I just put 1600's in the secondary location. I tried to take the diffusers out so that I could clean them and they jsut broke.
I talked to a few people and it seemed to be a concencus that taking them out all together was ok. You can either use the diffusers and take the legs off or place a spacer between the injector and o-ring. I don't know what the FC injector system looks like but 3rd gen guys tend to do it with their secondaries. Also I will not likely check this thread again. If you need some more info send me a PM and I will come back and comment. Hope this helps, David |
