my 1986 mazda has developed a starting problem. when i turn the ignition, if the engine does not start immediately, it becomes flooded and will not start unless i get a push and pop it in gear. any suggestions as to what is causing this problem. the engine only has original 100 thousand miles.

thanks for your help, jonathan

Welcome to the forum Jonathan.

Sounds like your engine may be getting tired. Have you had your compression checked recently? Rotaries are prone to flooding and it only gets worse as compression drops.

Have you tried flooring it from the get-go? That used to work for my old TII engine that was always right on the cusp of flooding.

There are also hacks people do like putting in a fuel pump cutoff switch, disabling the check valve in the pump, etc., etc..

Cheers
