just got another GXL car. this one is a beauty from the outside, too bad all of its coming apart for my TII car. anyways, the previous owner lost all keys he ever had to it. i need to get the ignition out so i can atleast move the steering wheel, possibly try n hot wire it. i need to know how to get the switch out. i've gotta get it out b4 it can even get on the trailer cause the damn wheels are turned. anybody that might know anything about the ignition switch removal, shoot me a few pointers or tell me how i do this without ripping the column apart. thanks for lookin.

Dave

you take the column covers off and unbolt it. then you unbolt the electrical switch and you can just use that to start it.

it should take all of 10minutes

The dealer has pre-cut keys that will work, but they need the original key with the four (five?) digit number on it. The number is on the metal part of the key up where the plastic fob begins. You must be in possession of that key (not just the number) for the dealer to give you a new one. Any hardware store can cut duplicates from an existing key.

As for just giving the dealer a VIN . . . . . . . . . I can see a problem with just anyone being able to walk into a dealer, giving the parts clerk a VIN, and having them hand out a master key. Anyone else see the problem with that scenario, or is my sinicism level a tad bit higher than most?

the key # is usually in the mazda computer, you need to show proof of ownership though

yeah, i have no title though- which could pose a problem. i think a bill of sales may be usable but not quite sure. i think i'll be using the dash removal stradegy.

Suposedly theres a roomer going around my town that people can get the vin # of peoples cars and then go to the dealership, get a key then steal ur car. I dont know about that. But if it is true, its gonna be electrical taped.

i remember a few years back reading on my corolla forums a link to this site. someone had a 3rd gen here who gave another member VIN numbers for "playin with carfax." 2 weeks later, the car is gone. nobody see's anything about it until there are mad parts bein thrown around on ebay. go figure... the GXL isnt stolen, so if anybody tries to claim it- YOU'RE WRONG! haha, hell, when i get the front end off the rest of the way, somebody can have the rest of the car for a windshield and a set of factory wheels.... anybody wanna make me an offer on that?
