If I sell the below car, what should I expect to get? If the number's too low, I am probably going to put it in storage for a while as I need garage space.

1989 RX-7 Convertible (red)

- 29,400 miles

- Closest to mint, showroom condition I've ever seen (no kidding) - even paint chips have been promptly and professionally repaired

- All stock except sound and security systems

Sound system:

- Sony CD-MX770 head unit

- Phoenix Gold 6-channel amp and Rockford Fosgate 10" subwoofer mounted on custom platform under spare cover

- MBQuart speakers in doors and under dash

- Headrest speakers integrated and operate with stock headrest controls (not used much, however)

Security System

- Let's just say very redundant system - would have to tow it with the siren blaring and, even then, would take a while to figure out how to get it started (nothing's foolproof though)

So what do you think?

Sorry, almost forgot one other non-stock item: Racing Beat chrome dual cat-back system (which, let me tell you, is a real pain to install by yourself without a lift)

6k at the max I would think

WishIhadaRX7 08-06-2003 03:12 PM

I'd think he could get 7k or maybe a bit more if he found the right buyer.

6k max.

Thanks - that's actually what I thought would be around the consensus number. Since I (reasonably or unreasonably) wouldn't consider selling for under $10K, I guess it will be heading to storage for a while.

i would buy that car for 9k, if the 29K miles is for real. park it and sell it 30 years from now for about 75-80k

NJDave 08-06-2003 10:31 PM

The 29K is real - double checked tonight and it is 29, 426 to be exact (posted in another forum that it was 29,436). Here's why it is so low: The car was a college graduation gift to my wife (it was new at that time). Only problem was that she didn't know how to drive a manual trans. So it pretty much sat in a heated garage. After college I was stationed in Alaska (Air Force) - not much use for a rear wheel drive convertible up there. We took it out of storage in the summers (always had it towed on a flat bed to a dealer for service first) and we put a few hundred miles on it each summer. Reassigned to DC in 1994. Car was brought out of storage in 1997 with 3,000 miles. Moved to NJ in 1999. Used the car in my daily commute (between 2 and 5 miles each way) to work and back until April 2002 when I got a new car. Car has been stored with only occasional use ever since in my garage. So, between spring 1997 and April 2002, put about 26,000 miles on it (~ 5,000 miles per year).

A year or two after taking it out of storage, I changed the transmission and rear end to Redline synthetic (after a mazda dealer put mobile one engine oil in the transmission, thereby causing horrible grinding). Still use regular oil in the engine given the controversy over synthetics.

The $9K is tempting and if I would have talked to you a month ago, I may have taken you up on the offer. Actually, just today I finalized plans to take the car back to a family member's house in Ohio this weekend to put it in storage. Only have a 1-car garage here and really need it for excess storage. When I move to a three car garage (hopefully in a year or two), will bring it back. Just drove it yesterday and forgot exactly how much fun it is to drive. Kinda a shame to put the car away.
