I'm having a weird idle issue, the problem is my car isn't getting out of the little warm up process and it is running way too hot, it just started happening today. So my guess is that a sensor is going out which may lead to my richness problem as well since my car has been running strangely richer than normal. I'm not sure what controls the startup so I'm going to replace my thermostat just in-case, could it be the TPS or the MAF? I don't know hellppp

Check compression.

is your car stuck on high idle or wont it go to high idle?

check the throttle body thermo sensor pellet on the throttle linkage, also check for air leaks. replace the rad cap also. i have noticed latly around here with the cold ass weather we have been havin alot of vehicals , my durango included wont get to full temp. i changed the t-stat and cemicaly flushed the cooling system and ended up with the same symptoms. i put a new rad cap on it and now the truck runs at normal temps again. my dads ram was the same way along with 3 chevy cars i worked on this past week and a buick. my rx7 had a coolent buzzer goin off a few years ago and i installed a new rad cap and the buzzer went away aswell.

man i really need to lay off the vicodine,,,,,,,,,,, i write too much when i take these things errrrrrrrrrr

warm-up process? i start my car up cold and it like idles fine for 10 seconds then it drops down low and starts revving itself. is that the warm-up thing or is my car just a pos?

u sir just have a vac leak start the car and take a can of carb cleaner spray it around the intake area and vac hoses and if the idle changes ur vac leak is where or around the area u were spraying then replace whatever gasket or hose that needs to be replaced and u should be good

and im guessing carb cleaner is available at my friendly neighborhood advance auto right? ok this sounds easy enough, but, whats a vac hose? pretty much need pictures. i dont read playboy for the articles either...

jwteknix 02-21-2007 05:05 PM

yes carb cleaner can be bougth at any auto parts store and vac hoses are vacume hoses usually attached to the uim, lim, throttle body and emissions basically spay the rubber hoses and intake manifolds lol

ok ive asked what a grounds and tps were, what makes ya think i know where the uim, lim, throttle body and emissions are? much less what they look like to find them? im tellin ya, im like an empty bucket of knowledge with cars. i know its got loud assed pipes on the back, and a new ox sensor (least it looks new) and the guy i bought it from told me the engine was ported, im guessing that means bored out something.

dude wtf u need to start learning shyt if u own one of these cars im not trying to be mean or anything just speaking the truth. uim= upper intake manifold, lim= lower intake manifold, throttle body is where ur throttle cable attaches to and controls air flow in to the engine these are all connected. emissions are **** that causes alot of vacume problems but allow u to pass inspection they control the bad stuff (chemicals) coming out of the exhaust and porting is the expansion of the intake and exhaust ports to allow better airflow hope this helps a little

excuse me for asking. ive never had to do any mechanical maintenance to any of the vehicles ive owned, so ive never been interested in learning anything about them, ive got alot more **** to do with my time. i saw this rx-7 and a 96 eagle talon tsi for sale at the same time for about the same price, i chose the rx-7 because i never see them around (appearently nobody has them around here) and because i like to be different. yes it needs some work, and yes ive tried looking things up online, but especially with rx-7 much less specific fc components i get crap links to fast and furious cars and broken links. ive ordered a haynes manual and its on its way, but even when i start looking through it im sure im going to have questions. sorry if i seem like a little kid with the questions, but with automobile engine knowledge, thats exactly where i stand.

TougeRoads96 02-21-2007 10:30 PM

well my original issue is that it won't idle normal once my car reaches normal operating temperatures, it starts off around 1500 which is normal and then will idle at about 1500-2000 once my car is fully warmed up. So it is making my car run wayyyy to hot, I did a test on it to see if it was throwing any codes and that didn't solve anything so I am stumped, what exactly controls the warm up idling? and can it be bypassed or checked for malfunctioning, and what does it run off?

machineRX 02-21-2007 11:38 PM

got some time with the camera tonight (sorry about darkness, its the digi-cam, the camcorder is on the fritz) heres some of my issues:

i have to pump the gas, then turn the key a couple of times to start. when i turn the key, the antenna goes up and the radio powers on, but there no clicking or trying to start from the engine, until usually the 3rd or 5th turn. it idles fine for about 20 seconds, then it goes into the "rev itself" mode (i was told today it might be vac lines, i gotta check this weekend i guess)

https://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y1.../th_mpg018.jpg

it does the revving for about 2 minutes or so. (yes the clock is never right) also, i have a check engine light that is on while idling, but if i give it gas the light blinks out, then returns at idle.

https://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y1.../th_mpg020.jpg

after the revving stage it steadies out to about 1500 rpm for a few minutes

https://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y1.../th_mpg021.jpg

and after the steady 1500 for a couple of minutes it drops to just under 1000 for the remainder of idling rpms. sounds loud, low, and bellowy (digi-cam audio does it no honor, though the neighbors say its too loud for 10pm)

https://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y1.../th_mpg022.jpg

then i guess the previous owner restored it with a gage cluster from an auto, but hey when i fire it up the parking "P" is lit, and when i go into reverse the "R" lights up. pretty neat i think. also, when i turn it off it takes a couple of seconds to sputter out.

i posted some better quality pix on my newbie post also. take a look in the eng bay and see if there is anything readily noticeable and wrong (besides the smog pump that broke off its bracket). thanx guys!
