i have an 89 gtu, my friend has an 86, it smells like my car is running richer than his, he has no cats, my car has the orginal main cat. We both have headers. How can i correct this problem? My car also fails emmision test's horribly. I dont think its just me but these rotary's get some bad gas mileage.

jefraney 08-23-2005 11:04 AM

You should be getting a little more than 20 MPG average on a NA. It almost sounds like your injectors are stuck open. Have you tried running injector cleaner through it?

rx7man629 08-23-2005 11:08 AM

yes i have ran injector cleaner through it 2 times, by stuck open do you mean even when the car is shut off? Because it never floods. I should really get them professionally cleaned but have no time to.

jefraney 08-23-2005 06:07 PM

Yes, they would be stuck when the car is not running. Big problem on RX7s. Has your car alwyas done this, like since you bought it, or just recently?

rx7man629 08-23-2005 06:31 PM

From what i remember it has always done this, When i first bought it i thought that was just the way they ran. Another thing is when i had hollowed cat's on it i would backfire like it was going out of style https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683785.gif , But my friends 86 has hollowed cat's and his never back fires https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683561.gif , and that also lead me into thinking that my car was running richer than normal. But if the injectors were stuck open or "leaky", wouldent the car flood when you turn if off and try restarting it?

jefraney 08-23-2005 08:33 PM

Yes it would. You may have upgraded injectors in it then since it has alwyas been like this.

89 Rag 08-23-2005 09:51 PM

The afm on my s5 was shot and ran really rich as well, it wouldn't hurt to check that out too.

jefraney 08-23-2005 09:56 PM

Thats true. A number of sensors will make the car run rich.

rx7man629 08-24-2005 06:17 PM

How can you test the meter? Would it throw a code if it was bad?

youngbecker 08-25-2005 05:00 PM

leave it rich, you dump bigger flames that way:D

rx7man629 08-25-2005 08:02 PM

Youngbecker, Id rather not blow $$$$ than blow flames, i used to think that was cool but the way gas prices are nowadays its not worth it. Plus with the stock cat in place its kinda hard to blow flames, when i had the hollowed ones thats all the car did.

nismo convert 08-27-2005 11:26 PM

You say you have a cat, if it's clogged thats also a souce of bad milage.

j9fd3s 08-28-2005 01:48 PM

bad o2 sensor will also cause poor mileage

RotorDemon 08-29-2005 12:34 AM

Using the gas pedal will give bad mileage too.

A little re-cap:

Dirty injectors, bad afm, bad O2 sensor, bad temp sensor(s) and a heavy right foot

all contribute to bad mileage or making the car run rich, what are we leaving out?

The fact that its an rx7. I think it is just a fact of life that your car is going to run rich at some point in its life. Its just a rotor thing.

I advertise for the site on my car, not unlike many others, and it's been at Pineapple racing/Gt garage's shop for a few weeks now so some "newbs" are gonna come and go.

Hazing never hurt anybody though, lol

It's a double edged sword at times, i'll go ahead and apologize in advance for the drifters, hopefully some imformative and dedicated people will stick around though.
