i havnt had time all this week to actually get out there and look... but i have an '86 Base 7, with the 4 lug and ive already bought 5 lug 18'' rims and 5 lug drilled slotted rotors as i am converting to 5 lug... ive posted before here asking if i had hub assemblies or inner/outer wheel bearings.... everyone in this forum said i had wheel hubs... wich is what i thought... but all the autoparts stores i.e. (advanced, napa, o'reilly, auto zone) all say in their computers that i have inner/outer bearings.... i just simply right now dont have the time to go out and take the wheels off and pull everything off and look... but i want to go ahead and get new hubs or inner/outer bearings.... can somebody tell me who is right!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!

since you seem new at this ill let you in on a little secret. the guys at the parts store never know what they are talking about for your car unless you see an rx7 other than your own sitting in the parking lot.

As someone who has replaced front wheel bearings, I can say both are right. If you call the dealer, they will only sell the complete hub assembly. However, it is possible to replace just the bearings, but it will involve removing some metal from inside the hub to allow the old races to be driven out. There's a how-to somewhere.



Please note, this is for a 5-lug. I don't know if the 4-lug hubs/bearings are different, but I suspect not.

Preach on brotha, i use to work on autozone and the stuff that was on the computer for my rx7 most of it wasnt **** that can go on our cars. **** was always wrong, so dont trust them peoples at the autoparts store, rely on auto repair manual and mazdatrix to see what your car needs.

P.s i use to park my 87 gxl all the time outside right by the major blvd so the rotors heads can see it and stop by and it worked/ =)

yeah, i finally got some time to go out and take the assembly off... its wierd... its like a hub assembly and separate bearings mixed... weird... and yeah ive had a lot of trouble at parts stores... hell i had to exchange some things more than 3 times till they finally got it right. what a bunch of stupid heads haha

Cover you ass procedures for DIY auto parts acquisition:

1) Have the year, model, VIN, engine description, all options descriptions with you.

2) Have the old part with you & match it to the new part.

3) Make a copy of the receipt & warranty information because the original will fade. (Even with no warranty, most companies will replace clearly defective parts if you have the receipt.)

4) You generally get what you pay for, so avoid the cheapest stuff.
