I need to figure out what to do about this. When I have a full tank and drive agressive I get a overwhelming gas smell.
Do you use your charcol filter? I am at a loss for what to do. |
I have seen mention of using a vented gas cap?
I was wondering if there was a check valve near the tank that released excess pressure to the atmosphere if it could not go through the charcoal canister? |
Not sure what engine management you are using but some computers will throw off a code if there is no pressure in the fuel tank.
|
I along with bigturbo74 do not have a charcoal canister. Neither cars ever smell like gas...
|
There are 3 lines running from your fuel tank. Fuel supply, Fuel Return, and the vent line which goes to the charcol cannister. My vent line is not hooked up to anything right now.
|
well my opinion is you can do it 3 ways.
old school: cap the vent line and run a vented cap, like a pre 67? car, you'll prolly still smell gas here and there, but since its the way it wass done back in the day it sould be safe stock: put the damn charcoal cannister back in, it weighs almost nothing, if you just hook the gas tank vent line to it it will take care of the smell. if you wanted a gold star by your name you could tee the other side of the cannister into the pcv system, like stock. in the stock setup they have a line going to the tbody so they can burn the vapors, and stuff, and theres a check valve so under boost the other end of the pcv is in front of the turbo. no gas smell here way 3 is the way you have it, i dont like it theres a gas smell under the hood, and that should be reserved for the rest of the fuel system, i like to use my nose to diagnose cars mike |

So I would say everytime I open my gas cap and its sucking in air is not good?
Just outta curiosity... |

Yeah, but mine sounds like if I didnt open it up the gas tank would implode. And everyones talkin about it being vented. That made me wonder if it shouldnt be suckin air...
|
Hmm.. well after hard driving and I go to fill up, I open the cap and it sucks in enough air to make me say "WTF".
|
Yep...thats the "Oh ****, I'm glad I didnt implode my gas tank..." remark.
So I'm wondering if maybe my charcoal canister is bad somehow, or well, dubbya tee eff? |
no they actually want a slight vacuum there, as long as its not sucking the tank shut* its fine
mike * the 83's have a bullitin and a new charcoal cannister just for this |
listen here pussies, haha! something must be truely different between our cars because i don't have a thing filtering the air from my tank and i don't smell a damn thing, even when i tried....? i dunno https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/wacko.png

I just left the canister in place connected to the vent line, no gas smell except when the car is idling https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

Interesting. Someone had posted a while ago about a valve by the tank, but I was never sure since I never took out my canister. I thought maybe it was this, since it looks like the line from the canister goes through this before the tank. But again, I wasn't sure https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

Isn't that the brake porportioning valve??
swooosh-- |
no you moe! the ppv is near the master cylender. its the shut off valve for when the car rolls over, it stops fuel from leaking out of the tank.....
|
I just used the stock Charcoal canister.
