I was out looking at used cars today with a couple of friends and I appened to come across an 89 GTU. I wanna be sure that its a GTU and not just an RX7 with GTU stickers. What are some signs that tell me if its real or fake. I dont think the dealer knows what it has, and if it is real I would probly buy it. Ive heard that GTu's are rare and I would like to have one. Any sugestions would be great.

ok this is very confusing:

1988: the gtu is a turbo 2 without the turbo

1989: the gtu is the base model

1989: the gtus is the turbo without the turbo

a turbo without a turbo?

edit: I think you mean how can you tell if it's a real GTUs... I think it's hard to fake a GTU, unless you put a sticker on it, but it'll be obvious what one is.. I guess. Maybe i'm wrong.

https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png all the go fast goodies, but the big cahoona, im trying to change that :smirk:

88 GTU 5-lug/big brakes, TII suspension, no options, lightest model/ drag coefficient peices/ TII mirrors, usually aluminum hood, 2 seaters.

GTUS had all that plus 4.3 in the rear.

turbo without a turbo is the quick way, its acutally not quite right.

the suspensions are the same, execpt the base models have thinner sway bars.

the 88 gtu, and 89 gtus have the 4 pistons brakes, like the gxl, and turbos

the turbos all have a sunroof, rear wiper, power windows; the gtus and 88gtu doesn't.

gtus's have turbo seats, and wheels.

so its not really a turbo without the turbo, is more like all of the go fast stuff without any of the luxury stuff

Short answer: The 1989 GTU you're looking at is a base model. Now if it was a 1988 GTU, or a 1989 GTUs, THEN you'd have something.

Of course, if it's a nice car, buy it anyway! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

The "TII suspension name" is really not used correctly when addressed.

All cars use the same stock springs no matter what model fc it is except for the convertible which are different to address weight.

The only thing that changes between different US FC models are the shocks. Depending on the model, year and weight of the car they are different shocks and struts.

And another thing since i'm on the role, lol. I don't consider the GTU's the turbo with out the turbo. It is still configured as an n/a with hard suspension with s5 TII rims but witha 4.3 rear. That's what makes it rear is the 4.3 since no other car has it stock.

PS forgot to say , swap bars are different if you have soft or hard suspension.
