I was wondering how many miles people are getting out of their stock engines. I know a lot of it depends on how one drives and how hard they drive I was just looking for and average. I have an 88 that just turned 100000. it has allways been well maintained and not abused and still runs great but I was wondering if I should start saving my pennies if these things have a dendency to blow with this many miles on them..If this seems like a stupid question please excuse I new to these rotaries..Dan

I've heard of well-cared-for n/a's going well in excess of 200k miles. My turbo II is presumably working on the original engine (nothing to suggest otherwise) and it's got a little over 101k. I suspect it was well-cared for in its earlier years, but since I've gotten it, I've pretty much just beaten on it at the strip. Nothing stupid, but it hasn't exactly been babied. Still runs strong. Naturally it gets fresh oil every year.
If you keep up with maintenance, it's not unthinkable that you would get another 100k miles out your engine before you needed to rebuild it. Just keep changing the oil, and keep up with belts, hoses, filters, and stuff. |
I just removed a N/A from a 1987 I am going through and it has 225 K showing on the odometer! (I am the 2nd title holder of the car) Tried to run too but fuel system was a mess. (car sat for 6 years in a garage) By the look of vacuum lines and the dirt it was the original motor. My 88 GXL lost an apex seal at 145 K but it was an auto and when I bought it at 65K the kickdown switch was bad. Was an easy fix but I am sure it shortened the engine life.

160k on my vert still runs strong. She gets her share of abuse all the time as well.
|
I think occasional abuse helps more than it hurts.
|
clears the carbon keeps the seals from sticking, gives the driver enjoyment. what could be better?
|
na's last for******* ever.
beat the **** out of it, it likes it. |
My GSLSE has 256k miles and will still beat a 5.0 Mustang! Drives great!
|
My '86 n/a got over 158k before an apex seal broke. I put a few hundred miles on it after that, too.
I'm not sure how the previous owner(s) cared for it or drove it, but I maintained it correctly, autocrossed it a bit, and revved the piss out of it regularly. |
I have seen TII's run up to 250K miles before letting go, mostly after mods.
N/A? Dedicated oil changes every 3K miles, fuel filter and some premix and I bet they would run well over 300K miles. Easily. |
my personnel best on a NA has been 249,5?? Miles
|
Mine must've been weak. It got regular oil changes, premixed (omp removed), all filters clean. Maybe the previous owner(s) were bad at maintenance? I guess I'll find out when I get around to opening this engine up.
|
Mine sees regular maint. I havent removed my omp yet. Is it a good idea to add premix with it still attached? Dan

yes.

Removing the MOP is easy if you want to do it up. Four set screws available at a fastener store for a few bucks to plug the block and intake manifold holes, and a block off plate for the front cover. If you have the front cover off you can remove the pump completely, but it requires another set screw so oil pressure doesn't piss out one of the cover galleries. No harm in blocking off the output drive of the pump. 4 stroke oil wasn't designed to be part of the combustion process, which results in all that carbon inside. You can't market a car that needs two stroke in the gas every fill up, so as long as you can remember to do it, I would make the move to premix. You won't hurt anything by adding premix to a MOP equipped motor, but for what it takes to drop it off in the nearest dumpster, I'd consider it. |
seems like the fc's run to about 220kish, and then something goes, at that point the oil and water seals are so weak, anything can kill em.
|
Do I need to pull the manifold off to get to the oil injectors to plug them?
|
the upper intake manifold will have to come off
