i wanted to know the other many ways of taking off the flywheel nut without using a impact gun.
Can i use the tool mazdatrix sells with a box wrench. Now wont that cuase a problem if im werking under the car sitting on a ramp and jackstands? how much force to do i need to take it off and put it back on Can i use a chizzle to spin the flywheel nut around till it loosens up a bit? |
theres a think made by mtrix or rb i think that you bolt to the block that holds the fw in still. you should be able to use that while the engine is in the car

get a long peice of steel. Drill two holes in the long peice of steel to match up with two holes on the flywheel where the pressure plate normally bolts to. Turn the flywheel until the peice of steel braces against the floor and giver
it helps if the steel is angle iron. Also, you might want to put a long piece of pipe (i used a 10 or 12ft) over your breaker bar for more leverage. Those things are way to tight. otherwise just buy the tool from mazda trix |
where can i get this box wrench and wahts the diameter of the flywheel nut
|
impact wrech got the nut of in 5seconds. then to get the flywheel itself off took forever. basicly beat the **** out of it with various mallets and pieces of wood that won't really hurt the flywheel. but that didn't work. what we ended up doing to get it off is taking a bolt that fits the holes in the middle and just tighting it till the flywheel popped off. make sure the bolt has a flat tip. be warned it could cause some damage to the endhousing too though

um im pretty sure the bolts that hold the transmisson work... grab one see if its the right pitch and then goto some kind of fastener store and get a few

Just trust me on this. Dont even bother trying to pull the flywheel without an impact gun. It would take you less time to put the engine in the back of a truck and take it to a shop and have them put an impact gun on the nut than it will be for you to try to take it off with hand tools.
yeah impact gun is the only way, spaceman spiff and i tried taking it off with a 6foot pipe and doing a leg press on it and the thing didn't budge. so we pushed the car a block away to used my friend's impact gun |
i tried a 5 or 6 footer, it was useless, but i doubled it up to a 12 footer that i had lying around (don't ask) and it came off w/just one hand. The difference in leverage w/doubling the length was outstanding. I would have used a gun, i just didn't own a compressor at the time.

I took mine to a local shop to get my flywheel put on and they charged me an extra hour for the tight nut they needed to get the size from. That and one of the nuts to the clutch stripped hard.
Poor mechanics. '=' |
instantly with a good impact gun, the flywheel even popped right off
ME: "this might be a bitch for the flywheel to come off" POP! "hmmm, cool, that was easy!" |
well for the manual car taking it somehwere was an option since the engine bay is stripped and all but i dont have all the necessary tools like a engine lift to take out the motor/tranny. So that 12 foot long bar has to work or im shitted on. and i dont want to take apart my motor from the bay and have to reconnect all that **** together again lol
|
how do you plan on using a 12 foot bar with the car on a jack anyway? theres no way youll have enough clearance to turn a bar that long. just go buy a compressor and an impact gun
The nut is 2 1/8". I got a socket at sears. You might wanna get the 3/4" drive breaker bar to go with it. My 1/2" one broke way before the nut loosened trying to get my flywheel off. |
did u use a impact gun or did u use the mazdatrix flywheel stopper? |
I initially tried bracing it with a metal fence post but the post started bending and eventually bent underneath itself. I had two people and a 6 foot pipe but i still couldn't get enough tourque so i put the engine in the back of a friends car and drove it to a mechanics, he took it off with an impact gun in 5 minutes for $5, I had to bring my own socket though since he only had up to 2". |
Don't bother doing the flywheel nut by hand
I had my engine on an engine stand, I had TEN FEET of breaker bar on the socket, and two guys reefing on it Didn't work If you absolutely have to do this with hand tools, rent a torch kit and heat up two shanks of the flywheel nut, and it will back off with hand tools very fast Unfortunately operating a torch, and operating it properly without damaging the nut or the flywheel or blowing something up, requires training. |
So, yes, impact gun = kthxbye to the flywheel nut.
|
i didn't realize u were gonna try to do it in the car, w/it just jacked up. Forget the bar, i'll bring my compressor, and Nick can bring his SnapOn gun, cuz mine isn't strong enough. i took mine off when it was out of the car.
